What Is A Police State?

Guest post, by Rodney Lee Conover:   Your ex-girfriend may have a nuclear device

.

I hear a lot of people complaining that the Obama Administration is leading us down a path where one day we will be living in a police state.

I ask you this:  What do you consider “a police state?”  Does it mean residing a place where authorities are standing in your living room, watching everything you do and waiting to place you in shackles if you violate any new “thought police” statutes?  Is it like the old Soviet Union or the current North Korean regime?  What?

While you’re thinking about that, let me tell you where you live right now:  You live in a country where the Federal government can (notice I didn’t say “does” or “might” or “will”) can listen to every phone call you make, read every email you send or receive and track your movements once you step outside your home.  They can access your IRS information on how much you make, where you make it and your perceived intentions regarding tax-relation activity.  Soon they will have all your medical records and can see what you’ve been treated for and what type of doctor you’ve been to.  And they can do that without your permission…

jimclapperliarI’m not saying they are doing it. I’m merely pointing out that they can. And they now have been dragged kicking and screaming into admitting it in public, with the exception of a few lies in front of Congress by the head of the NSA, James Clapper (currently the Director of National Intelligence).  My question to you is simple:  What is a police state?

If for whatever reason, the Federal government decides you are someone of interest, they can, without any concern for your Fourth Amendment rights, investigate all forms of your communication, Facebook postings, Google searches, cell phone conversations, whatever.  And if they hear the right buzzwords (they decide the buzzwords) they can do the same to your friends, relatives, enemies, acquaintances, Facebook pals, whoever.

You know what I hear less and less of lately? That Snowden is a traitor. And for good reason.

I’ve been told over and over again that the NSA doesn’t spy on Americans.  Then they were, but they won’t.  Then they would but they couldn’t.  Then they did but they won’t anymore.  Now they just do.  This is about political power, not catching terrorists.  Grow up.  There is no time in this country’s history where the government has been given power and they didn’t abuse it.  It’s the nature of power and this is no different.  Need more?

A British newspaper, The Telegraph, is reporting that NSA staff has been using their technology designed to catch terrorists to spy on their lovers, past and present.  Yes, there’s nothing like keeping a watchful eye and ear on your ex, just in case they’ve decided to set off that nuclear device they’ve been building in the spare bedroom. The folks who swear they won’t abuse their power or use it in any way to further their careers or help a politician or oppress a fellow American in any way, are keeping tabs on what their love interests are up to.  Their phone calls, emails, Internet activity, searches and who knows what else.  I’m serious – who knows what else? Raise your hand if you think they haven’t been downloading Snowden’s hot girlfriend’s every email, photo, conversation and who knows what else?

spyingeverywhereI heard Dana Perino – someone I highly respect and admire – say that with all the intelligence they gather, the NSA is of course going to gather some information by mistake along the way.  But this is not an innocent slip-up. This is the deliberate abuse of power and denial of civil liberties guaranteed under the Constitution to their victims and all of us.  These weasels did not break the rules – they broke the law.

Until they are rooted out and held accountable, the NSA should not be in charge of anything.  The NSA is not about terrorism or spying, it is about gathering information for coercion, oppression and political extortion.  Raise your hand if you think every bit of information on President Obama’s enemies and potential adversaries are not being organized for use by the usual suspects – Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett, Plouffe – all of ‘em.  Go look up the Cloward–Piven strategy and get back to me if you don’t believe it.

What is a police state?

paul_lee_cruzI just hope that Senators Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul haven’t searched anything online that can be used against them in 2016 because it will be.  I hope none of their relatives, co-workers or friends have done any research or looked at any subject that will allow CNN, the NY Times, MSNBC, CBS, The Washington Post and all the others to scream the headline; “REPUBLICAN NOMINEE’S UNCLE GOOGLE’S TOPLESS ACTRESS !”  Don’t worry; I’m getting to Hillary…

I’m not exaggerating. It’s so easy now – before you had to sneak into or know somebody at the FBI willing to give you 900 confidential files of Republicans, and then explain how they got in your sitting room with your fingerprints on them.  Or you had to be married to the President and the whole thing goes away – but still it was a lot tougher then.  Now you just Instant Message your buddy at the NSA; they stop listening to their ex-girlfriend talking to that guy she met at the gas station long enough to upload enough info on anybody to find something that can be twisted into a scandal.  Or maybe you need to intimidate, say, a Supreme Court Justice into rewriting ObamaCare so it somehow seems Constitutional?…”Just say it’s a tax or something.  What can they do – you’re a frickin’ Supreme Court Judge for life, baby!”…  Just being hypothetical there.

Here’s what we know:

  • Clapper lied to Congress, nothing happens
  • The NSA says they have broken privacy “rules” 3,000 times in the past 12 months or so nothing happens
  • Again, these are not rules; they are laws that were broken
  • The law states these violations are felonies which call for up to $250,000 in fines and five years in prison for each violation No one has been charged

This is what we know. Imagine what we don’t know? If this isn’t a police state, what is?  Twenty words or less.  Thanks.

Hillary tells another whopper

William Safire sized up Hillary Clinton some thirteen years ago as “a woman of undoubted talents who was a role model for many in her generation” … He also said she –“is a congenital liar.”

Well, she’s at it again. This time it’s about her favorite subject — abortion.

Hillary Clinton testified before Congress last month about the Obama administration’s commitment to dismantling pro-life laws around the world.

“When I think about the suffering that I have seen of women around the world – I’ve been in hospitals in Brazil where half the women were enthusiastically and joyfully greeting their babies, and the other half were fighting for their lives against botched abortions,” Secretary Clinton told [Rep. Chris] Smith in a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing April 22. video clip

Yesterday, Hillary’s spokeswoman told the National Catholic Register that the State Department was “unable to confirm where or when the trip she referred to in her testimony was – where specifically in Brazil she was visiting or when the trip occurred.” source

Imagine that.

Words Have Meaning – More on the DHS Report

President Obama’s DHS created a stir in conservative circles a few days ago with the release of a controversial report on the potential rise of “right wing extremism.” Emotions are still raw. It didn’t help that the liberal website “Media Matters” made light of the concerns of the right, calling the reaction a “ conservative media freak-out.” Media Matters then offered this defense of the DHS report:

…while the report addressed potential issues that could spur right-wing extremism, it did not allege that someone is an extremist simply because he or she holds conservative views.

Well, that’s good to know.

However, Media Matter’s conclusion contradicts a number of big-name Democratic Party figures who have used the exact same label of “right wing extremist” to describe mainstream Republican leaders.

Vice President Al Gore accuses President George W. Bush as being a “renegade” Right Wing Extremist. Source

Senator Hillary Clinton accuses President George W. Bush of being a Right Wing Extremist. Source

The Clinton Whitehouse accuses Whitewater critics of being a “Cabal” of Right Wing Extremists. Source

President Bill Clinton accuses President George W. Bush and Senator John McCain of being Right Wing Extremists.
Source

Time after time for years now, prominent figures on the political left, including the past Democratic administration, have used “Right Wing Extremist” as a pejorative label to refer to mainstream Republicans.

But now, all of a sudden, we’re not supposed to believe that the new Democratic administration means the same thing when talking about “Right Wing Extremists.” Oh no. We’re over-reacting, hyperventilating even.

My B.S. meter is pegged out.

It’s time for the political left to get this.

Words have meaning.

Red Alert: Confidential witness ready to blow up Clinton and Holder confirmations with dirt on the Marc Rich pardon, Doug Ross

But then, Obama wouldn’t be behind this. No. Never. Henh.

A Libertarian Defense of Social Conservatism, By Randall Hoven

I’m still searching for the mythical creature that is the “financially conservative, socially liberal” politician. In virtually every case, the pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage politician is the first to vote against a tax cut, the first to vote for more spending and quick to compromise principles on any issue there is.

Using the National Journal’s ratings of Senators in 2007 , the correlation coefficient between “economic” scores and “social” scores is 90%. That means they almost always go together; financial conservatives are social conservatives and vice versa. Every Senator scoring above 60 in economic issues, scored above 50 in social ones. Every Senator scoring below 40 in economic issues, scored below 50 in social ones. If there is such an animal as a “financial conservative, social liberal”, it does not exist in the US Senate.

Muslim Fanatics ‘Hijack British Prison’, Daily (uk) Express

MUSLIM prisoners have launched a reign of terror inside a top security British jail.

The fanatics are forcing fellow inmates to convert to Islam or face punishment beatings.

One man who stood up to the thugs was branded with a lump of hot metal, according to a prison source.

The crisis at Whitemoor jail in Cambridgeshire has led to calls by staff for the 100 Muslim inmates there to be dispersed to other prisons round the country.

Some Al Qaeda supporters have set up a kangaroo court, sitting in judgment on prisoners and ordering punishments, the source said.

Hawaiian officials admit withholding Obama’s original BC, Israel Insider

Now it’s pretty apparent why Barack Obama made his sudden, last minute visit to Honolulu. It wasn’t Granny’s health problems that interested him but Hawaii’s Health Department.

The strategy may have backfired. A statement by Hawaiian officials Friday that they have seen but won’t release an “original” birth certificate that has never been released raises more questions than it answers.

Time for a Bank Holiday, The Nation

Here is the ugly, unofficial truth that neither Wall Street nor the government will acknowledge: the pinnacle of the US financial system is broke–with perhaps $2 trillion in rotten financial assets on the books. Nobody knows, exactly. The bankers won’t say, and regulators won’t ask, or at least don’t dare tell the public. Official silence naturally feeds the conviction that banking’s problems are far worse than we’ve been told. The Levy Economics Institute of Bard College puts it plainly: “It is probable that many and perhaps most financial institutions are insolvent today–with a black hole of negative net worth that would swallow Paulson’s entire $700 billion in one gulp.”

UBS may need extra bailout, swissinfo

Switzerland’s biggest bank, UBS, could receive another bailout if it faces more difficulties under the global financial crisis, the Federal Banking Commission says.

Citi to get bailout,
WSJ

WASHINGTON – The federal government agreed Sunday to take unprecedented steps to stabilize Citigroup Inc. by moving to guarantee close to $300 billion in troubled assets weighing on the bank’s books, according to people familiar with details of the plan.

Treasury has agreed to inject an additional $20 billion in capital into Citigroup under terms of the deal hashed out between the bank, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Treasury officials will charge a higher interest rate for the capital injection — 8% for the first few years — than it has charged to dozens of other banks now borrowing money under the government’s the $700 billion rescue package approved by Congress last month.

Biden: the next to go under the bus

Already the Democrat long knives are out, clearing the path for the exit of Joe Biden from the Democratic Party ticket.

CBS News and The Politico have picked up on the story by investigative reporters Chuck Neubauer and Tom Hamburger in the LA Times.

a potential conflict of interest involving Biden and one of the nation’s biggest asbestos litigation law firms — which also happens to be his top contributor.

The report seems to provide fuel to Obama supporters enraged Illinois senator picked a running mate with such deep ties to the D.C. cash-politics-lobbying world.

The Associated Press has the story of Biden, and his questionable relationship with MBNA, the largest employer in Delaware. Coincidentally, employees of MBNA make up the largest source of campaign contributions for Biden.

A son of Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden was paid an undisclosed amount of money as a consultant by MBNA, the largest employer in Delaware, during the years the senator supported legislation that was promoted by the credit card industry and opposed by consumer groups.

And, oh, by the way:

In a separate matter in which Hunter Biden’s lobbying activities were referenced, he and Biden’s brother Jim have been sued for allegedly defrauding an ex-business partner.

As Obama’s under-the-bus crowd continues to grow, it is clear that the preparations for an emergency Bidenectomy have been made. The only thing standing between this happening is Sarah Palin’s Wednesday night acceptance speech at the RNC. If she does poorly, then Biden stays. But, if she performs well, and wows not only the partisans in St. Paul but also the independents watching on their television screens, then the worst fears of the Liberals will have been realized.

Obama will have no other choice but to dump Biden and choose the only VP candidate that will give him a winning shot.

Hillary Clinton.

Kentucky Blowout

Hillary Clinton opened a giant-sized can of W.A. on Barack H. Obama tonight in the Kentucky Democratic Primary. It’s hard to imagine how the Obama campaign can spin any type of positive message coming out of the Bluegrass State, as their hopes now are hanging on a large margin of victory in Oregon.

Even though BHO expects to earn enough delegate votes to put him over the top tonight, his loss of momentum, and the growing negative perception of his viability as the presumptive Democrat nominee is troubling to many voters. Suffering another West Virginia-style drubbing, especially among white voters, Obama simply cannot put Hillary away.

With 90% of the votes in, Clinton has a whopping 35 point lead.

CNN reports some interesting exit polls, which suggest a bitter divide between the two camps.

Two-thirds of Clinton’s supporters there said they would vote Republican or not vote at all rather than for Obama, according to the polls.

Forty-one percent of Clinton supporters said they’d cast their vote for John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, and 23 percent said they would not vote at all.

Just 33 percent said they would back Obama in the general election, according to the polls.

Those numbers are even worse for Obama than in West Virginia one week ago, where 36 percent of Clinton voters said they would back him in the fall.

Top 10 (plus 2)

Frank J. has posted his top 10 things he’ll miss about Hillary….

10. That special way our soul aches every time we see her.

9. The way her laugh rid the neighborhood of stray cats.

8. How her smile melts steel.

7. When she said she’d obliterate a country, you knew she meant it.

6. How, despite all the trouble he’s caused, she’s spared the life of her husband because she still loves him.

5. The way she referred to babies as “fresh souls” as if she were talking about produce.

4. How in her debates with Obama, you could see in her eyes that she was truly plotting to kill him.

3. When she went to YearlyKos, the Kos Kids would scatter and hide under furniture like cockroaches.

2. How she’d fight for universal healthcare despite the fact that you knew in her heart she wouldn’t care if we all died.

And the number one thing we’ll miss about Hillary Clinton…

It was nice to know there was at least one Democrat out there with balls.

Now, I’m wondering what Doug from Upland is going to do if we’ve no longer got Hillary Clinton to kick around anymore.

Plus, what are we going to do with all of the perfectly good opposition research we’ve accumulated in anticipation of facing the Clintons in the general election?

Jeremiah Wright is the least of his problems

It’s time to back away the Jeremiah Wright kerfluffle.

If Lanny Davis and other Clinton surrogates want to play the race game, then so be it. Obama is no racist, nor is he responsible for the inflammatory and seditious statements made by Jeremiah Wright.

Earlier today, I saw a video that has been mentioned by several bloggers on the right, which compares certain passages from Obama’s book and with selected video clips from several of Wright’s sermons. The viewer is led to the conclusion that Obama poses a threat to the country because of his racial beliefs.

The reason that Obama should not be President has nothing at all to do with race, and to spend time on these kinds of tactics won’t defeat him. It ignores the fact that his lack of experience leaves him unprepared to assume the duties of the job. It also ignores the fact that Obama exudes a certain grandiosity that surpasses mere cockiness and is, well, unseemly, if not dangerous.

Earlier this week at a San Francisco fundraiser, Obama said, “…foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident that I know more and understand the world better than Senator Clinton or Senator McCain.

Oh, please.

After belittling Mrs. Clinton’s experience as First Lady as being ceremonial fluff, Obama went on to say that among the three candidates for President, only he passes the 3 AM Leadership Test. Indeed, he alone possesses “the judgment, the temperament to ask the right questions, to weigh the costs and benefits of military action, who insists on good intelligence, who is not going to be swayed by the short-term politics.” What a piece of work. source

And as for the ultimate foreign policy test, the one John Kerry called, “passing the Global Test,” Obama proposes a diplomatic Manhattan Project of sorts, with Iran’s Mahmoud Amadinejad. The same Ahmadinejad who said today, his country’s objective was to destroy what he called corrupt western powers:

“Our objective is to annihilate all corrupt powers that dominate our planet today,”
source

Iran is building nuclear weapons, and has tested the delivery systems to carry out Ahmadinejad’s objective. If he uses them, he gains favor of his god, and ushers in the End-Times chaos of the 12th Mahdi. If he is in turn incinerated in a retaliatory strike, he gets to spend eternity with 72 virgins. He wins either way.

Taking a college trip to Pakistan, living in Indonesia for four years as a child, and having poor relatives in Africa has convinced Obama that he has the necessary gravitas to engage in foreign policy on behalf of the world’s only superpower.

Jeremiah Wright is the least of his problems.

Thursday Reading List

hillary_book_finesthour.jpgDick Morris provides us with a Hillary Clinton score card of lies … ones she has admitted to and ones she won’t confess to.

Chelsea Clinton says that this college student was the first person to ever ask her about Hillary’s handling of the Monica Lewinsky scandal … yeah right.

Of course a socialist, anti-American dictator would not want John McCain to be the next US president.

This list of recent Bush pardons should show you how completely asinine some of our laws are in this country.

Here’s a global warming movement I can get into … just deal with it.

When your city gets sued by the ACLU and costs taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, the logical solution is to declare an official “American Civil Liberties Union Day.”

In Central Florida and cities around the country, Real estate agents are starting to set up Foreclosure Bus Tours.

When the government feels it is necessary to track “adult material” in the state … something tells me that paying a $250 fee and registering with the secretary of state is going to be met with some resistance.

The IRS finally realizes there is such a thing as YouTube and dedicates it first video to sending you money.

Government at its finest … a soldier who served more than four years in the British Army has been told that he can’t become a citizen because he applied on the wrong date.

Can somebody please tell me what is wrong with this story? The building is being demolished. It catches on fire. Shouldn’t someone thank Mother Nature?

What happened when Chicago imposed a tax on bottled water? Well one thing is for sure, the politicians are upset that their constituents have outsmarted them.

A local barber shop in Michigan has been told that it can no longer serve a free beer with a cut … because the government said so.

Weekend Smorgasbord

Starting with the Morphing Kitties,

Wouldn’t you have loved to be a fly on the wall during this conversation?

LESTER HOLT: Before we talk about what was behind your endorsement of Obama, I’ve got to ask you about the phone call you had to make on Thursday to Senator Clinton. You’re friends with the Clintons, you worked for Bill Clinton in his administration. What was the phone call like?

BILL RICHARDSON: Well [chortling], I’ve had better phone calls. I talked to Senator Clinton about 9 o’clock, and I told her, and, you know, she was, she was disappointed. It was a little bit heated. [ed: I'll bet!]

Bill Clinton had told his wife’s campaign that he had received several assurances from Richardson that the governor would not endorse Obama.

In endorsing Obama, Richardson was not only taking sides in the most bitter of political fights, but rejecting the candidacy of a close friend.

“There’s something special, there’s something special about this guy,” Richardson said of Obama. “I’ve been trying to figure it out, but it’s very good.”

[ed: Don't feel bad, Governor. Obama makes the best speech about nothing that has ever been made. That you can't figure out what it is that you like about him puts you in the company of the majority of Democrat voters. Of course, you might just be campaigning for the veep spot. Heh.]

The continuing attack on Christianity, liberty, and the institutions of democracy from the convergence of the radical left, and muslim mufsidun:

Gadaffi says the Bible is a fraud

Gadaffi was speaking to a large crowd at Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium in Kampala after leading the Thuhur (afternoon) prayer, where he said any Bible and Torah (Old Testament) that does not mention the Prophet Mohammed was written by mankind and therefore a fraud.

“The Bible we have now is not the one that was revealed to Issa (Jesus) and the Old Testament is not the one that was revealed to Musa (Moses). Muhammad is mentioned in both (original versions), but the Tora and Bible we have now, there is no mention of him,” the Libyan head of state said.

The Canadian government has ordered a Christian ministry that teaches doctrine and the differences between Christians and cults shut down because its reference materials were “critical” of the beliefs of those who are not Christian…

So what used to be called MacGregor Ministries with offerings in how to recognize and eliminate “faulty fads” in Christian churches has been re-created in the United States, and now operates under the name MM Outreach Media Ministries.

Jeff Head weighs in on Black Liberation Theology

“Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.”

EurabiaWatch: Taking Christ out of Christianity

That triumphal barnburner of an Easter hymn, Jesus Christ Has Risen Today – Hallelujah, this morning will rock the walls of Toronto’s West Hill United Church as it will in most Christian churches across the country.

But at West Hill on the faith’s holiest day, it will be done with a huge difference. The words “Jesus Christ” will be excised from what the congregation sings and replaced with “Glorious hope.”

Thus, it will be hope that is declared to be resurrected – an expression of renewal of optimism and the human spirit – but not Jesus, contrary to Christianity’s central tenet about the return to life on Easter morning of the crucified divine son of God.

Obama: Religious right has “hijacked” the faith

In a 30-minute speech before the national meeting of the United Church of Christ, which supports gay marriage, the Democratic presidential candidate said, “Faith got hijacked, partly because of the so-called leaders of the Christian Right, all too eager to exploit what divides us.” Obama said, “They’ve told Evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting to the rest of the country that religious Americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage, school prayer and intelligent design.” Obama said a growing number of evangelicals are concerned about poverty and the environment.

Is Obama “American” enough?

…the uproar over Reverend Wright “has legs.” The consensus among the panelists was that Obama might have stanched the bleeding among Democratic primary voters but that the issue will continue to dog him in a more virulent form with questions about where his true loyalties lie. Is he American enough?

Tryphorgettin

Now that Big Mo’ seems to be shifting away from Obama, it’s time to remind America why Hillary Rodham Clinton should not be the President.

Here’s a Golden Oldie from the TruthBoating Files ……….

Obama: “I never knew it!”

The audacity of chutzpah.

After 20 years of church membership, Senator Obama now claims he had no idea of the anti-American, leftist hate speech from his pastor,

“None of these statements were ones I had heard myself personally in the pews,” Obama told FOX News. “Once I saw them I had to be very clear about the fact that these are not statements that I am comfortable with. I reject them completely they are not ones that reflect my values or my ideals.”

Right.

Are we back to parsing statements, and redefining the meaning of “is?”

Better yet, why don’t we just define what Obama is lying about.

If in fact he never heard Wright’s hate-filled sermons, it simply means that he wasn’t in attendance on the numerous times that Wright went on a rant.

But, it doesn’t mean that Senator Gravitas wasn’t aware of Wright’s words, or his separatist views. And it doesn’t explain why he waited until now to disavow Wright.

It simply means he never heard it from the pews. And frankly, that’s just not good enough.

It’s clever, just not credible.

Ok Hillary, the ball is teed it up for you. If you don’t slap this sucker baldheaded, then you don’t deserve the nomination.

Bob’s Bites asks, Is Obama Lying?

He expects us to believe, that in twenty years of attending the same church, he never knew his pastor hated America. I find it hard to believe he didn’t know about the hatred Rev. Wright has for America. This man preaches about America spreading HIV to blacks on purpose, planning Sept. 11, 2001, and preaches God Damn America. How in the world can Obama not have heard about this in 20 years of attending this church.

Update: The Smoking Gun ….. In a story by the NYT [ screenshot ] dated March 6, 2007, Jeremiah Wright recalls a telephone conversation with Obama. In that call, Obama explains why it was necessary to distance himself from Wright.

“You can get kind of rough in the sermons, so what we’ve decided is that it’s best for you not to be out there in public.”

That clanging sound you hear is the sound of all four tires flying off the Obamagasm Express.

Update:  Jake Tapper at ABC agrees.

+++++

Update: Obama campaign throws Wright under the bus. But, MSNBC is not above a little moral equivalence, comparing Wright’s hate speech with recent comments by Geraldine Ferraro…

Wright was the latest in a series of advisers to Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who have stepped aside as supporters of both candidates trade racially charged accusations.

Crash and Burn

Awww Dang

Both Eliot Spitzer and Dickie Scruggs crash and burn in the same week.

Who’d a thunk it?

Oxford lawyer Dickie Scruggs and his law partner Sidney Backstrom entered surprise guilty pleas today in a federal judicial bribery trial that has shaken the Mississippi legal community.

Dickie Scruggs and Backstrom each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to bribe an elected official, which carries a penalty of five years in prison. But prosecutors are recommending a 2 1/2-year sentence for Backstrom. They each would have to pay $250,000 in fines plus court costs, under the recommendation. If the two had been convicted of all counts in the federal indictment, they each would have faced a maximum of 75 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.

Fear and Loathing in the Lone Star State: Page 47, VRWC Handbook

Mick Gregory reveals his winning strategy for ridding the nation of Las Clintonistas….

I voted for Obama tonight and helped pick delegates. In our voting district Obama won 7 delegates to Hillary’s 4. Knowing Hillary’s instructions, “take control of the secretary position…” I nominated a nice young woman named CJ, who had an Obama badge on her coat and was sitting at an Obama table at the middle school library.

I also talked a neighbor into being a delegate. The people spoke. We shut down the Clinton machine in our neighborhood anyway.

After all the hype and fawning over the pantsuited presidential candidate, Obama actually won more delegates in Texas. Did you read anything about that in the New York Times, Houston Chronicle or Dallas Morning News?

Nice work Mick.

The Democrat Debate in Ohio

The first 15 minutes dealt with socialized medicine, mandates, and Hillary was on the attack early and often.
Mrs. Clinton displayed her inner-wonk, and dominated the conversation. On a cut to Obama, the camera caught an expression on his face that showed a near eye-roll as he gave an “okie-doke” glance to the moderator.

The next question to Hillary was about NAFTA, and Hillary protested about having to go first, comparing the debate to the SNL skit. There was an awkwardness that was uncomfortable to watch. Neither candidate committed to pulling out of NAFTA, but the more Obama talked, the less sense he made.

More to come…

Foreign policy questions regarding Iraq and Pakistan were next, and both responses were painfully naive. Clinton said, “I would have been tougher on Musharref.”

[I wonder how much tougher we could have been on the Paks. They were not an ally of ours in 2001. Cheney basically told them to get on board or get bombed to the stone age.]

On getting out of Iraq, Obama said, “We will be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in.”

Clinton repeated that there is no military solution in Iraq.

Finally a tough question from Russert, and Hillary balked with a response about not answering “hypothetical questions,” then parried to criticize Obama for not holding oversight meetings re Afghanistan on the SFRC.

Obama responded by saying he has been campaigning, and has taken his argument to “the people.” Neither candidate answered the question, but Obama came closer than Clinton.

Commercial Break….

[First take....remember the Gore-Bush debate when Al thought he scored a hit by chiming in with "what about the XX bill?" It was an arcane piece of legislation that no one knew anything about, except Gore. Hillary is filling the Gore role tonight.]

Next segment, the mods tried to play gotcha.

Hillary pressed to release tax returns and documents at the national archive.

She said she would urge that this be done as soon as possible. [that's gonna happen]

Obama questioned about Farakhan and NOI.

His response was OK, but Hillary parried to talk about rejecting the support of the Independence Party during her Senate run. Hillary scored a rare point.

Next Commercial Break…

On Obama’s “Liberal” voting record, how can you run a General Election campaign?

Obama says he and Clinton differed on only 2 votes. The ratings are “silly,” and the “categories don;t make sense…”

On Russia, Hillary was asked about Putin’s successor…she claimed that Medevev would be Putin’s puppet.

Obama was critical of Bush, and made no new points. So if Russia sends troops to Serbia, Obama said he would

“Work with the international community” and say “that’s unacceptable.” [Kerry Global Test?]

[final take: On what government is supposed to be about. Obama summed it up well. He made the points I needed to hear as to why a Democrat should not be elected in 2008.

Hillary said she would like to have her Iraq vote back. Obama said he would like to have his Terry Schiavo vote back.

Hillary won the debate on substance. The High-def TV is not kind to her. Obama won the debate on style. The camera loves him.]

Showdown in Austin

hillaryobama.jpgAUSTIN, Texas (CNN)It’s showdown time in Texas.

The Democratic race was very different when the candidates debated three weeks ago.

Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois will face off in a Democratic presidential debate in Austin Thursday.

The debate, to be held on the campus of the University of Texas, will air live on CNN.

If words are as important as candidate Obama asserts, hopefully the CNN mods will take advantage of this historic opportunity to focus less on the ‘horse-race’ and the campaign rhetoric, and more on finding out what the candidates really mean.

Betsy McCaughey, former Lt Gov of New York, has penned several interesting questions regarding one of the major issues in the Democratic primary — universal healthcare.

1) Sen. Clinton: When you pledge to cover every one of the 47 million uninsured, do you include recent and future newcomers to the United States, legal and illegal?

2) Sen. Obama: You have said that you will require all parents to have health insurance for their children. What will you do to enforce this law?

3) Sen. Clinton: a question about young adults. They think of themselves as invincible and are not apt to buy insurance. Your “mandate” would force them to do so, and more than that, to pay the same premium as middle aged people whose health care needs generally are much greater. You defend the one-price rule as “shared responsibility,” but isn’t it an unjust, hidden tax on the younger generation?

4) Sen. Obama: You have pledged to make health insurance “affordable.” Texas lawmakers have made insurance less affordable by requiring that every plan include in vitro fertilization, acupuncture, marriage counseling and some 50 other features. This is like passing a law saying that the only car you’re permitted to buy is a fully loaded luxury sedan.

Would you allow Texans (and all of us who live in states with similarly costly insurance requirements) to shop for cheaper insurance outside our own state?

5) Sen. Clinton: You promise that “everyone who is already insured will be able to keep the coverage they have today.” Yet your proposal says all health plans must cover services “experts deem necessary.”

About 4.5 million people have high-deductible insurance, because it costs less and allows them to make their own decisions about where and when to get medical care. But when Massachusetts passed mandatory health insurance, people with high-deductible plans were forced to switch to more expensive medical policies to meet that state’s definition of insurance.

Will that also happen under your proposal?

6) Sens. Obama and Clinton: Some doctors and hospitals are worried about your plans to make electronic record-keeping compulsory. What will be the penalty for a doctor who doesn’t get computerized?

7) Sens. Obama and Clinton: Both your proposals call for limits on the profit margins of insurance companies. Attacking the most unpopular industry in America may sound politically attractive, but if profit margins are legally capped, investors will flee to other industries and private insurance could become a thing of the past. That would leave only a government-run health-care system.

Do you believe the nation should take that risk?

Rosenbaum’s Revelation, part 2

Remember the story from Ron Rosenbaum, about the LAT sitting on a “potentially devastating sexual scandal involving a leading Presidential candidate?”

Most of the speculation at the time centered around Hillary Clinton and and her girl Friday, Huma Abedin.

Fast-forward 4 months, and take a look at this exclusive report over at Cao’s.

Now have a look at this.

Finally, check out this video.

Is it possible that this is Rosenbaum’s revelation?

Huck takes WV

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Mike Huckabee won the first contest declared on Super Tuesday, picking up all 18 national delegates awarded at West Virginia’s state GOP convention. Huckabee bested Mitt Romney, who entered the Mountain State event with the largest bloc of pledged convention-goers.

Both men and Ron Paul made in-person appeals to the more than 1,100 convention delegates attending Tuesday’s convention. But the former Arkansas governor beat his Massachusetts counterpart after delegates for John McCain defected to his side.

The first round of voting at the state convention produced no winner, but eliminated Paul after his fourth-place finish.

Meanwhile, radio talk show host Sean “Puff-Daddy” Hannity repeated his demand that Mike Huckabee drop out of the race because he was getting in Mitt Romney’s way. He charged “collusion” on his afternoon radio show between McCain and Huckabee, claiming they had no right to deny the only “true conservative” a clear path to the White House.

While we’re at it, I think it’s also time to demand that John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama withdraw from the race as well, so that any and all obstructions to Mitt Romney be forever and completely removed. Come to think of it, we should just do away with all this election shiite and just ask Sean “Puff Daddy” Hannity who he thinks the new President should be. Think of all the time and money we could save.

Update: Maybe we should let Hannity and Limbaugh play rock-paper-scissors for the right to name the new President.

Update 2: Huck says, Romney “can’t even keep a straight answer on the whining or no-whining question.”

Tax cuts for the rich

You’ve heard it for years. Depending upon your point of view, it’s either one of the more disingenuous claims of the populist Left, or it explains the unholy alliance of power and money of corporate America with the wealthy oligarchy.

You’ve examined the veracity of the claim, and answered it to your own satisfaction.

There is only one reason the Left continues to trot out the “tax cuts for the rich” theme: it works.

The reason it works is equally simple.

It is true.

It’s also false.

There are infinite possibilities to spin “the truth” from both sides of the political spectrum, with each side scoring points, discrediting the position of their opponent, and making convincing arguments of the “rightness” of their position.

TCFTR is an emotional, almost gutteral indictment that will never be successfully countered by a scholarly rebuttal, even with a little snark mixed in. That hasn’t stopped the Right from trying. Stephen Moore has tried, and tried, and tried. His case is persuasive – if you want it to be persuasive, and shameless propoaganda – if you are so inclined to believe. Largely ignored during the primary season, it will again become the Left’s weapon of choice in the general election season.

John McCain will not counter it. He believes it. He used the rhetoric of Left to oppose the Tax Reform Act of 2001.

Mitt Romney cannot counter it. A Harvard Business School response will fall upon deaf ears. Romney knows this, and he won’t even try.

Mike Huckabee can. He is, in fact, the only one who can. The way to respond to an emotional, populist charge is with a response that is equal parts of emotion and populism, and delivered with conviction. Huckabee can do it with the credibility that will be necessary to make it stick. And, once successfully countered, it is put to bed, once and for all.

The question is, “Will he?” It is a general election theme. The rewards for rolling out a tactic before time might decrease it’s effectiveness, but as time grows short, it may be the last card that Huckabee has left to play.

Interesting tidbit: “Who pays income taxes?”

Rules for radicals

Update: We’ve noticed that a large number of readers have found this post looking for a download of Rules for Radicals.

To my knowledge, there isn’t a free version on the net. I have, however found Alinsky’s last interview, given in 1972 to Playboy magazine. It is a great read, and an eye-opener… Here is the pdf (takes a moment to load) alinsky_1972_interview1

+++++

alinsky.jpgWho is this man, and what does he have to do with modern leftist political tactics?

His name was Saul Alinsky, the mentor of Hillary Rodham Clinton, and the consigliere emeritus of modern liberalism. His 1971 book, Rules for Radicals, reads like the political playbook of the Soros-Clinton machine, as well as allied groups such as Moveon.org, CREW, ACORN,and others.

Alinsky was also the subject of the previously suppressed 1969 Wellesley Thesis by one Hillary Rodham.

Please feel free to download the pdf. As the election season moves into full swing, it becomes more important than ever to gain insight into our political opponents.

The thesis is long and tedious. I’ve never read a thesis that wasn’t. But, it should also be revealing.

I expect it provides a window into the mind modern democrat party and the lengths to which they will go to achieve power. And, that makes it an important read. I plan on posting some comments after I’ve read it in detail.

So, who was Saul Alinsky? Here is an interesting snapshot of his leftist holy book (h/t Slyfox):

saulalinskyrfr.jpgRules for Radicals provides the organizer with a tactical style for community organization that assumes an adversarial relationship between groups of people in which one either dominates or is dominated.

“The first rule of power tactics is: power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.”

“Wherever possible go outside the experience of the enemy. Here you want to cause confusion, fear, and retreat.”

“Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules. You can kill them with this. They can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.”

Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also, it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.”

“The threat is generally more terrifying than the thing itself.”

“In a fight almost anything goes. It almost reaches the point where you stop to apologize if a chance blow lands above the belt.”

“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

One of the criteria for picking the target is the target’s vulnerability … the other important point in the choosing of a target is that it must be a personification, not something general and abstract.”

“The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength.”
