The double standard

The Washington Times said it best … “It’s a sad day in America when the shooting of an abortion doctor stops the presses but no one notices two soldiers gunned down by an Islamist.”

In contrast to the flurry of Presidential and DOJ activity following the Tiller murder, there has been no reaction at all from the Obama White House regarding the Islamist attack at a Conway, Arkansas recruiting center.

Toby Harnden writing at the UK Telegraph notes this statement from Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

“The stories of two very different lives with similar fates crossed through the media’s hands yesterday – both equally important but one lacked the proper attention. The death of 67-year old George Tiller was unacceptable, but equally disgusting was another death that police believe was politically and religiously motivated as well.

“William Long died yesterday. The 23-year old Army Recruiter was gunned down by a fanatic; another fellow soldier was wounded in the ambush. The soldiers had just completed their basic training and were talking to potential recruits, just as my son, Track, once did.

“Whatever titles we give these murderers, both deserve our attention. Violence like that is no way to solve a political dispute nor a religious one. And the fanatics on all sides do great disservice when they confuse dissension with rage and death.”

Harnden asks, “Is there a double standard operating here?”

I suppose the question is rhetorical.

  1. Can’t offend the “Muslim in Chief”. Obama’s Muslim Roots

  2. Of course there is, as I haven’t heard any announcement that AG Holder will be providing security to our recruiting stations, but he will to abortion clinics.

  6. Oh…..Koko Taylor is dead.
    God Bless her.

  7. Dang. I’ve been frantically wrapping up my job responsibilities at school these past two weeks (unemployment day one here–yay!), as well as caring for the livestock and pampering the garden. My computer suffered catastrophic failure–not greatly surprising given that it IS 7 years old and is kept in a non-airconditioned office (because I prefer the big ol’ ceiling fan) but the humidity is kinda bad for electronics. I heard nothing of either of these two events for I couldn’t get news online (SwampMan unreasonably (in my view) insisting that he needed to use his computer for work and he NEVER wants to have a news program on; if I watch television, it is likely to be the Fox business channel and/or local weather forecast. Naturally, I didn’t have a backup because I was still considering whether I should have an online backup system or an additional hard drive. Oops.

I’m not sure what I should do about another computer. I’m dithering between a desktop model and a nice little portable so I can blog in the comfort of the comfy chair. OTOH, I break things, so I don’t know that a nice little portable would have a long and happy life. I’ve got two entire days to dither because SwampMan has two days of work before HE is off for the summer and will insist on using HIS computer as though his design work takes precedence. Heh.

Back to the topic (what was it again?), I believe that many (most?) Americans are so busy with their families, jobs, and hobbies/social life that they are completely unaware of most news items that occurs outside of their geographic location. My co-workers, for example, have family responsibilities that include chauffeuring kids to swim team, little league, soccer, scouts, music lessons, tennis lessons, football in the fall, etc. that keep them hopping after work and on the weekends. They do not have the time or energy to keep up with national events. When I brought up what I considered newsworthy events at work in the past (before computer death) nobody that I worked with had heard of them.

  8. Been wondering where you were …
    Happy unemployment!

Here’s another story you might have missed.

Ahh grasshopper. David Carradine found dead in Bangkok

“Kung Fu” and “Kill Bill” star David Carradine was found hung himself in a closet in a hotel room in Bangkok on Wednesday, police say suicide.

  9. I think he was in Wild West Tech as well. I remember way back then when we prefaced a huge whopper/wild tale with “grasshoppah”.

  10. Argh, gotta get dressed in clothes besides shorts and a T-shirt and get ready for grandson’s “graduation” from preschool to kindergarten this afternoon. They dance, sing, AND wear caps and gowns! Can’t miss that.
