Mexico to shut government in flu fight

MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s government is suspending all nonessential activity of the federal government and private business as the number of confirmed swine flu cases jumped.

The decision came as global health authorities warned Wednesday that swine flu was threatening to bloom into a pandemic, and the virus spread farther in Europe even as the outbreak appeared to stabilize at its epicenter. A toddler who succumbed in Texas became the first death outside Mexico.

Closing government and businesses would seem to be on the extreme end of social distancing plans.

It was only just over a week ago that Mexico began closing schools and cancelling sporting events.  It appears that the spread of the disease is a week or two ahead of the US.  In fact, we are seeing large scale school closings in the States this week.  Can we expect similar business and government closings here next week?

    Mexico has reported 152 fatalities in flu-like cases in recent days, seven of which have been confirmed as swine flu. Another 19 patients have been confirmed as having swine flu but surviving. About 2,000 people have been hospitalized with symptoms.

    I’m still waiting, but I ain’t afraid yet.

    I’m glad to hear it. I’m sure she’s keeping her eyes and ears alerted for warning signs.

    Tell her if a guy shows up wearing a sandwich board, ringing a bell, and shouting, “bring out your dead”, then she should head toward Boulder CO.

    Actually, she didn’t seem too concerned with it, and none of their schools were closing. The teachers were just reinforcing common sense to the kiddos, and having them wash their hands often, while saying their ABC’s.

    From the number of tourists that are bringing swine flu home, it seems that this latest H1N1 virus is really pretty widespread in Mexico.

    I don’t think the government would shut down its offices AND kill the tourist industry unless it thought it was facing a huge emergency.
