Update: death toll expected to rise to 230
Residents of the southeastern Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria continue to battle major fires, as dozens have died, and homes and businesses have been lost. RSOE Alertmap reports 35 deaths so far. Kinglake and Marysville township in Victoria have reported major damage. More from ABC News
Authorities are unable to get into Kinglake to confirm the level of destruction but yesterday ABC Local Radio listener Peter Mitchell said the entire town was on fire.
“The whole of Kinglake is ablaze,” he said. “I live a couple of kilometres out of town and when I heard explosions I went to the end of my road to see what was going on and by the time I got there I saw fires everywhere.”
‘Ceased to exist’
Jane Cowan visited Marysville this morning and says the township has “virtually ceased to exist”.
“We were in the main street and it’s like a warzone, like a bomb has been dropped on the entire township,” she said.
“People there are in an absolute state of shock. Most people had already left, but the people, I’d say about 30 people that are still left and had spent the night sheltering on the Football Oval there, are just completely dazed.
“[They are] walking around the streets with rugs around their shoulders because it’s actually getting cold here now if you can believe it.

Dang, I heard over Fox news this morning that a lot of people lost their lives in the fires and that some are suspected of being deliberately set.
Dang….just dang!
God Bless those poor folks.
The death toll is up to 108 now.
We had the fires last year that consumed as much acreage and a lot of homes but the deaths down under are especially bad. I’m sure thankful for our communications and fast responses.
They don’t have the resources on the ground to combat big fires but curiously, the houses out there in the boonies seem to surrounded by trees, something that you definitely do NOT want in a wildfire prone area.
I think it’s so dang hot they need the shade. But they could still clear farther out, before the fire gets near the house.
On another note, we have a few inches of new snow tonight.
Here in Australia it was apparently the hottest place on the planet last week. It’s been heat wave conditions all over the country. After three years or so of very cool summers it was all pretty bizarre! At least it was lovely at the beach.
The lowlifes who lit those fires may find themselves in a bit of trouble of their own once they get rounded up. Causing whole families to be fried alive is not exactly smiled upon around here! And they weren’t all just ‘silly kids’. One of the arsonists was 31 years old.
Meanwhile you Northern Hemispherians got snow. Enjoy!
I hope they catch them and turn them over to the public.
Yeah, the arsonists should get the death penalty for sure. I was hoping that they’d been burned to death.
Yeah, I know about that shade versus heat thing…..we have to balance out the huge trees around the house versus hurricanes every dang year.
*sigh* We’ve been gradually cutting trees.
I feel so bad for the people who have lost their homes in the fire. I never realized how lucky i am for living in a place where it never has wildfires. Bless the ones who are taking some of them in for the night.
