Now, certainly people can disagree as to the various merits of each position, but it seems to me that, in an age when these churches are losing members in droves (at least in this country) things like this demonstrate that organized religion seems more committed to its own destruction than all the Richard Dawkins and PZ Myers in the world combined.

They may be losing members in droves in your neck of the woods but where I’m from, churches are alive and well. In fact, some friends that visited from the left coast were surprised at the sheer number and huge sizes of churches in very small communities.

If somebody wants a female priest, they should go to a church other than Catholic. If somebody wants to be openly gay, they should avoid religions that consider it a sin. That “openly gay” bishop should have been dismissed from his (or her) church position so that he (or she) can practice whatever sexuality he/she pleases.
