First it was cow farts, then it was moose belches. And now, it is … drumroll, please …
beetles. No, not the Lennon/McCartney variety.
An outbreak of mountain pine beetles in British Columbia is doing more than destroying millions of acres of lodgepole pines: By 2020, the beetles will have done enough damage that the forest is expected to release more carbon dioxide than it absorbs, according to research published in the journal Nature this week. Bark beetles also have killed swaths of pines in the western United States, including about 2,300 square miles of trees in Colorado.
The study, led by Werner Kurz of the Canadian Forest Service, estimates that over 21 years trees killed by the beetle outbreak could release 990 megatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere — roughly equivalent to five years of emissions from Canada’s transportation sector. source
We’re Dooooooooomed.

And yet they still won’t allow it to be logged to stop the problem. If they clear-cut the affected area and whatever perimeter needed to be cut, and removed all the trees, it could be replanted and you’d have a decent forest back in 50 years.
Now, Robert D, we’ve told ya’ and told ya’, stop making sense, these are trees the green meanies are worried about.
I know…. I gotta stop letting the facts influence me. I’ll keep trying.
I just saw a new global warming commercial ….
STOP GLOBAL WARMING, OR ALL THE REESE’S PEANUT BUTTER CUPS WILL MELT
Well now, we can’t have that. Oh, wait, I have this thing in my house that will stop the melting…..4 things actually. If the A/C turned up wont do it, I have two fridges and a big deep freeze.
I’m impatiently waiting for my land to become beach front property.
Maybe in another 12,000, Swampie. Take out a long-term note on it.
Got to say, having grandbabies sure is fun. Also, they do take up a whole bunch more of my time, that used to be selfish time.
I want some beach front property too! Although when that comes it means most of California has fallen into the ocean. And that could happen in an instant, compared to the slow warming to raise the sea level.
I’m Glad for you n2l, I know what that means to you. I’m kind of an agnostic on children.
It’s just me, I don’t care for most adults, but love old folks and kids.
To see my grandson, how alive and joyful he is, and to know I had a part in making him, keeps me in awe.
That’s why I’m glad for you bud.
T’anks!
In other news, expecting some more booming skies tonight, with the potential for heavy rain and hail.

Attention Robert D, JC Watts speaks.
JC Watts knows what he’s talkin’ about.
Yeah, get used to having no selfish time!
/You got a baby seat for that bike yet?
Got it. Thanks n2l.
Henh…no Swampie, I don’t, and I don’t think my showing up riding it would be greatly appreciated.
I had gotten quite comfortable with being selfish, too.

Well, having a lil’ child think you’re better than a peanut butter and extra jelly sammich trumps bein’ selfish. Most of the time.
I guess faults emitting CO2 just can’t keep up with beetles.
