This could certainly be another arrow in the quiver. Along with nuclear energy (pebble bed reactors are at least as safe as hydropower, the waste disposal issue is a no-brainer, and MIT has placed plans for a modular PBR in the public domain), thermal polymer reaction plants (that do much the same thing as the process mentioned above, using virtually any hydrocarbon containing material from packing plant waste to sewage) and even satellite power stations: there are more than a few options that are technically feasible right now, with off-the-shelf technology.

The only problems are overcoming the political barriers and the intertia of the installed base of energy production.

Of the two, the political barriers are both the easiest to see and perhaps the most difficult to overcome, in part because of the intertia of the installed base of energy producers--greed--and in psrt because of the luddites--stupidity--who want us to descend into the darkness of energy deprivation.

But then, greed and stupidity (well, along with envy) are usually at the root of most of our problems.
