   In a way he is correct. Sorta. He is just candy coating it. And there by pulling the wool over the eyes of the ignorant.

   Interpretation

   A “spiritual struggle/jihad” against all infidels and the west, winner take all. Their main goal is for Islam to become the global way of life. So yes it is “spiritual” in a round about way. To Muslims at least.

   Islam + spiritual + struggle = jihad

   Just as when Muslims say their’s is a religion of peace.
   The oft referenced “peace” will come when all is under the “Islamic” thumb. Peace to them as in a global caliphate.
   They will then be at peace. Thrilled to ‘pieces’ that they rule the world.

   Just my two cents.

   Sorry ’bout the long winded comment. I am just so sick and tired of reading all the BS PR they continue to spread.

   Then an article that proves how effective the correct terms have been. Stop Calling Terrorism Jihad.

   We’ve seen Iraqis turn against al-Qaeda and insurgents particularly in Al Anbar Province, which include the cities of Haditha, Ramadi and Fallujah. They have turned toward Coalition forces only as we “win hearts and minds” by familiarizing ourselves with their religious customs and terminology, showing that we are not the enemy. Aside from that, Iraqis see the hopelessness of hirabah and are emboldened to turn against the movement and its participants as an act of religious devotion. WE NEED TO CAPITALIZE ON THIS.

   When we properly call terrorism hirabah rather than jihad, we alienate terrorists like al-Qaeda from the Muslim population and marginalize their efforts. In doing so, we show consideration for the Muslim religion, no matter what our personal opinions may be on the religion itself, and persuade good Muslims to support the effort against apostates like Osama bin Laden and the rest.

   It does, nuke. I recognized how important that research was when I first came across it back in the summer of 06. I approached several of my ME friends, many are no longer muslims, and asked them about the terms “mufsidun” and “Hirabah”, and if using those terms would make a difference with average, uneducated muslims, and they gave me an emphatic yes. Words have meaning, regardless of the language or culture.

   Welcome, vh. I have shared that link here many times, and at other places. I even emailed the good folks at counterterrorism blog when I found it, and they emailed back that they thought it was interesting, and would discuss it among themselves. For most, just saying jihad is simpler, and requires no explano to most people, whereas changing the terms would require some work when you just sprung it on someone for the first time.
