Mark Trevelyan, Security Correspondent for Reuters, writes an interesting piece on the lack of specificity of language in combating terrorism. From the standpoint of mis-identifying the enemy from the get-go, Trevelyan is correct.
But, by allowing themselves to be intimidated by apologists for Islamic supremacists who supposedly “take offense” at any reference to the religion which encourages and supports murder, martyrs, and dying for their god, Reuters and other MSM outlets are abetting those very individuals and organizations who would like nothing better than to see the death and destruction of western civilization.
At a major conference on terrorism in Brussels this week, for example, debate on how to tackle al Qaeda was punctuated by repeated arguments over the terms “jihad” and “jihadist”.
Frequently used by al Qaeda itself and by counter-terrorism specialists and in the media to denote “holy war” against the West, the word jihad signifies for most Muslims a spiritual struggle.
“You can struggle for elimination of poverty, you can struggle for education … you can struggle for something very, very positive in life,” said General Ehsan Ul Haq, former chairman of Pakistan’s joint chiefs of staff.
“Now to call jihadists as terrorists is either reflective of …lack of understanding of Islam, or it is I must say an intended misuse, which again is unfortunate,” he added. “It might have been somewhat excusable in the trauma post-9/11 but I don’t think it is any more.”
Sheikh Mohammed Mohammed Ali, an Iraqi scholar, told delegates at the annual conference of the EastWest Institute think-tank: “Jihad is the struggle against all evil things in your soul…There is no jihadi terrorism in Islam.”
Wrapping Islamic terrorism in political correctness is just another example of the great struggle that our Republic faces: the convergence of radical leftism with Islamic terrorism.

In a way he is correct. Sorta. He is just candy coating it. And there by pulling the wool over the eyes of the ignorant.
Interpretation
A “spiritual struggle/jihad” against all infidels and the west, winner take all. Their main goal is for Islam to become the global way of life. So yes it is “spiritual” in a round about way. To Muslims at least.
Islam + spiritual + struggle = jihad
Just as when Muslims say their’s is a religion of peace.
The oft referenced “peace” will come when all is under the “Islamic” thumb. Peace to them as in a global caliphate.
They will then be at peace. Thrilled to ‘pieces’ that they rule the world.
Just my two cents.
Sorry ’bout the long winded comment. I am just so sick and tired of reading all the BS PR they continue to spread.
But he is right, using the term “jihadi” has positive connotations to the average muslim, not just the murderers. I’ve been linking to this source for a year and a half, and it has only caught on a little bit with some, but there is proof it is effective, and has been in Al Anbar.
First this source…Loosely Interpreted Arabic Terms Can Promote Enemy Ideology.
Then an article that proves how effective the correct terms have been. Stop Calling Terrorism Jihad.
good point. Hirabah needs to become part of the lexicon
For some reason I have never heard it put that way before. Odd considering all I have read on the subject.
Thanks for the education n2l.
It does, nuke. I recognized how important that research was when I first came across it back in the summer of 06. I approached several of my ME friends, many are no longer muslims, and asked them about the terms “mufsidun” and “Hirabah”, and if using those terms would make a difference with average, uneducated muslims, and they gave me an emphatic yes. Words have meaning, regardless of the language or culture.
Welcome, vh. I have shared that link here many times, and at other places. I even emailed the good folks at counterterrorism blog when I found it, and they emailed back that they thought it was interesting, and would discuss it among themselves. For most, just saying jihad is simpler, and requires no explano to most people, whereas changing the terms would require some work when you just sprung it on someone for the first time.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ve heard it before. Islam is peaceful, jihad is an inner struggle, blah blah blah.
Now when more Muslims start standing up and denouncing the terrorists, then I will listen.
I just came across this ‘quote of the day’ over at Doc Bulldog’s & Ronin’s place.
Hmm…
Henh.
Here are some quotes from Ol’Moh in the Hadiths.
Ain’t he a peach!
