The official USMC insignia, took it’s current form in 1868. There are three elements, eagle/globe/anchor.
The significance of the elements are as follows:
Eagle-with it’s spread wings, represents a proud country.
Globe-is for worldwide service.
Anchor-for maritime tradition.
None of our branches of the military have the rich history or traditions, proud though they be, as the USMC.
Throughout our nations history, there have been many names of our USMC, that have become well known due to their heroic actions while serving our nation in war. I wish I could honor them all individually. This blog does have it’s own personal marine hero, in one Jim Baxter, and he continues to honor us with his information and observations.
I will link to one of my all-time personal favorite USMC heroes, Mitchell Paige. Not many of our service members ever receive the MoH while living.
Here is his page at “Home of Heroes,” and this is his personal story, from the battle at Guadalcanal.
Here is Mitchell Paige’s personal statement, which sums up the type of marine we honor today.
“I am proud to be a citizen of a nation whose objective is peace and goodwill for all mankind. A nation which has contributed so much for the benefit of peoples all over the world. A nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all. I am proud to be an American. I can never believe it is old fashioned to love our Flag and Country nor can I ever believe it is being square to stand in readiness behind our flag to defend those ideals for which it stands against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
Mitch Paige, MOH
One small note on Mitchell Paige, he was the inspiration and first model for the action figure we came to know as “G.I. JOE.”
To all of our Marines, past, present, and future, thank you for your service to our great and grateful nation.
Happy Birthday and Semper Fidelis.

Happy birthday devil dogs.
My nephew just graduated from basic. Doing some additional training.
He looks great in dress blues, if I may say so myself.
