Why Mike Huckabee?

mudd.jpg I’m going to call this my personal “Roger Mudd Moment.” For those of you that are too young to know what that means, click the photo and read about the famous Roger Mudd interview that forever ended the presidential aspirations of Edward M. Kennedy. Mudd asked Kennedy the simple question, “Why do you want to be President.” Kennedy’s inability to give a coherent answer completely wrecked his candidacy.

Last week, I got an email from the Huckabee folks, asking me to write an entry on why I support Governor Huckabee for President. For almost a week, I’ve drawn a total blank. What do I do? Should I be straightforward, or should I write something that sounds good?

Well, I think I owe the good folks who stop by here each day a straightforward assessment. It’s nothing fancy. Just the thought process that led me to believe that the right man for the Republican nomination for President is Governor Mike Huckabee. So, at the risk of sounding incoherent, and Kennedyesque, here goes…….

I moved my family to our new adopted hometown several years ago. It was an election year, and one of the ladies in our Sunday School class asked the Missus and me to vote for her son who was running for one of the local offices. I asked her if he was a Republican or a Democrat. She smiled and very sweetly informed me, “Sir, everybody down here is a Democrat.” I couldn’t help but chuckle, and the Missus made sure that was all I did by nudging me and saying something about “Aunt Mildred” — our private code for “you had better shut up.”

And, sure enough, when I went to the polling station on election day, I asked where the Republican line was, and the poll watcher said, “Sir, there aren’t any Republicans down here.” But, rather than vote in the Democrat Primary (which was euphemistically called “the First Primary”), I went on back home, and waited for the general election so that I could vote for a Republican.

And, in a round about way, that brings me back to the subject of this post.

You see, I’ve known for whom I was going to vote for quite a while — I’m going to vote for the Republican Nominee.

The issues haven’t changed that much since I first time I voted a straight ticket in 1988, but the sense of urgency since 9/11 has increased dramatically:

National Security. Judicial Appointments. Tax Fairness. Right to Life. Family Values.

This time, however, being “right” on the issues is only part of the equation. Here is what I wrote when I decided that Mike Huckabee would be my choice for the nomination:

“Conservatives are ready for a cogent and articulate presentation of the conservative message. And, as much as we appreciate the steadiness and focus of President Bush in defending the homeland, the fact is, the message has been lost.”

“The American People want to be inspired. Conservatives, in particular, demand from their leadership a higher standard. The election losses of 2006 are a perfect example of what happens when our politicians put self interest before the Republic’s interest. Mike Huckabee is a genuine person of character, with an inner strength that is based on an abiding Faith. In the difficult days ahead, these qualities will sustain him, and provide us all with the leadership the nation needs.”

“It is truly my pleasure to endorse Mike Huckabee for the Republican nomination for President.”

Nothing I’ve seen since then has changed my mind. The more I learn about this man, the more convinced I become that my decision is sound.

I invite all of my friends, readers, and subscribers to consider Mike Huckabee for President.

UPDATE: Mrs. reminds me that she did not use the “Aunt Mildred Nuclear Option”, but rather, employed “The Look.”

I stand corrected.

UPDATE 2: Closing remarks at this week’s debate

The Gov’s alliteration towards the end presents a pretty powerful and potent point. Heh™
