The Interstate Hwy. 35W bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed this afternoon, dumping at least eight cars and a truck into the water and land below. It was not clear how many people might be hurt or killed. Workers have been repairing the bridge surface as part of improvements along that stretch of the Interstate. Rescue workers were helping some people from cars in the river. People at the scene said the entire bridge collapsed, leaving part of the roadway submerged and part above water. A number of people were walking around on the roadway that was not submerged.

Tons of concrete have collapsed and people are injured. Survivors are being carried up the riverbank.

“The entire bridge, more or less, has collapsed into the river,” said Lt. Amelia Huffman, Minneapolis police spokeswoman. “It’s unclear what caused it.”

The freestanding bridge was undergoing maintenance and had a MN-DOT crew on it at the time of the collapse, she said. It is unclear the number of cars or people affected by the collapse, “but it’s certainly a substantial number,” she said.

William Larson, an assistant nurse manager at Hennepin County Medical Center, spoke to media at about 7 p.m.

“We have a major disaster going on,” Larson said.

  1. Lines in minneapolis are jammed…trying to see if family and friends are safe. It is so tragic. Pray for those involved to be safe.

  3. That is one of my worst nightmares. I hope that all are rescued safely.

  4. Just heard about this incident a little while ago, on the way home.
    What a terrifying disaster.

  5. As a truck driver who just 2 weeks ago went over that bridge, I can tell you that when I cross bridges in this 80,000 beast, I often worry about just such a tragedy. I only hope that the loss is kept at a minimum.

  6. How come Homeland Security can say “No terror or Islam connection” within minutes of the crash?

  8. It is to prevent mindless panic in the masses; i.e., us.

  9. Has Nancy Pelosi suggested the Republicans/Bush/Cheney did it yet?

The Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine, built in 1927, had a 2/100 rating, but the residents did not want it torn down and replaced. Instead, it is being refurbished while the residents/tourists cross the river on a temporary bridge. (Banging head on desk.) Well, at least the lanes will be 11 feet wide instead of 10 feet wide, although still below standard.

The absolute worst bridges I have seen in my life have been in the midwest across the Missippi and Missouri rivers. On one of the bridges I was on years ago during a drive up to see my grammaw, I swear I could see down to the river through the concrete in places that had crumbled away, although the steel was in place. I hope those are better; I quit taking the back roads to avoid some of those bridges.

  10. I’m waiting for Democrats to blame Cheney.

  11. Hey, the way the leftards minds are(notice I didn’t say work), if you drop a cell phone call, it is W’s fault.
