“Hydrogel” repairs and regenerates human tissue

In a major step forward for applied medical research, scientists at the University of Delaware have announced a breakthrough discovery of a bio-material that may be used to repair and regenerate human tissue.

University of Delaware researchers said the biomaterial can be injected as a low-viscosity gel into a wound where it rigidifies nearly on contact, opening the door to the possibility of delivering cells and antibiotics to repair damaged tissue.

The researchers said the new technology has the potential of regenerating healthy tissue in a cancer-ridden liver, healing a biopsy site and providing wounded soldiers in battle with pain-killing, infection-fighting medical treatment.

Associate Professors Joel Schneider and Darrin Pochan said their patented invention marks a major step forward in the development of hydrogels for medical applications.

Schneider and Pochan reported their research in the May 8 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Their research is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

  1. By the types of spam I get, I’m thinking the first immediate market will be for penis enlargement.

  2. ooh this is promising! :)

  3. Y’all be sure and go to Iowahawk’s place to vote for this year’s Hoosegaw Honey.

  4. I can’t believe that the Senate killed the John Doe amendment. Sheesh. Can they possibly be any more out of touch with the public?

  5. Oh they in touch, with the Trial Lawyers. It’s a potential gold mine for them, and ain’t no way they gonna deprive them.
I don’t get into the hoosegaw thing.
    I’m wore out…night.

  6. I was out in my usual (futile) attempt to one day be mistaken for an anorexic tonight at the track. At 8 p.m., the air was a heavy humid blanket and the temperature was still above 90.

In the next field over, the county’s most affluent town and a little rougher town from outside the county were playing a baseball game complete with lights for when the sun set and a good sound system that carried the announcements over to me.

The sea breeze started to stir and with it thunderclouds started to build and rumble to themselves off in the distance, and then I heard the crack of the bat and the announcer say “The score is 4-0 with zero outs and the bases loaded.” I gave up on exercise at that point and instead ambled over to watch the game as the sun set.

Watching a summer baseball game in a small town as the evening cools, eating a hot dog dripping mustard and relish (dripping down my T-shirt in this case)from the concession stand and washing it down with a can of Coke that had been cooling in a tub of ice, cheering wildly for all the players in the mostly empty bleachers because most of the people watching the game were sitting on the back of their pickup trucks…it was a couple hours of sheer enjoyment.

    Night, y’all.
