“I am Iraqi”

Last Sunday, the Iraqi national soccer team defeated–astounded is more like it–Saudi Arabia by a score of 1-0, giving the people of this war torn country something it doesn’t get very often: something to smile about.

But this is more than just a victory in a sporting event. It’s a victory for all those, especially the people who have to live there, who decry the sectarianism which is rending this country apart. Midfielder Nashaat Akram said “This is a gift to the united Iraqi people, to the different spectrums of the Iraqi people.” Laborer Muhammed Hussein said, “They (the players) showed us what the real Iraq is and how we can work hard to be something. These players are what the Iraqis are”.

It is reported that t-shirts encouraging an end to sectarianism with the slogan “I am Iraqi” have sold out everywhere.

Of course, this is still Iraq, so it comes as no surprise that the day was also somewhat marred by sporadic bloodshed. Police shot some asshole attempting to drive a car bomb into a crowd in the south Baghdad neighborhood of Sadiya. Luckily the car exploded and no one but the suicide bomber was killed, which I guess made it a good day for everyone, including the suicide bomber.

Earlier in the day police stopped two Saudi Arabian nationals attempting to detonate cars packed with explosives in the eastern neighborhood of Zayuna. And I thought Yankees fans were sore losers.

But let’s focus on the good stuff for a minute:

In the northern Kurdish city of Irbil soccer fans waved the Iraqi flag, while dancing the debka, a traditional Kurdish dance, arm in arm in the middle of the street or atop moving cars, while In Kirkuk, a northern oil city known for its melange of ethnicities, Sirwan Rasheed, 55, a Kurd, said he erected flags in the team’s honor with friends of various sects and ethnicities — Sunnis and Shiites , Turkmen and Christians. Sounds kind of like Boston in October of 2004.

What’s important here is the example being set by this soccer team. The team’s leaders include both Sunni and Shiite Muslims, who work well together and talk publicly about overcoming sectarianism. People, especially young people, look up to sports heros, and the Iraqis are no exception. At a time when sectarian tensions between Shiites and Sunnis have worsened in the Iraqi government and on the streets, the soccer team, known as the Lions of the Two Rivers, may have some part in helping Iraqis understand the benefits of putting aside sectarian hatred and working together to make their country a decent place to live. Sports heroes are role models, and Iraq certainly needs a few of those.

The strife in Iraq, and the rest of the world, for that matter, will never end until the people living there decide for themselves to choose peace over war, to choose understanding over hatred, to choose life over death. Can a handful of athletes, who seemingly have already made those decisions, be a catalyst to peace?

I believe they can. After all, I’m a Red Sox fan. I’ve already seen one miracle.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I borrowed (pardon the expression) liberally from this article for this post.)

Let me introduce myself….

Please don’t think from my following remarks I’m a Republican apologist. I’m a Democrat whose mother headed the Democratic Women’s Club in Austin, Texas for nearly a decade and whose father worked for LBJ for many years. They were hard line conservatives until the seventies and there was a decided swing left. Hell, I was leading the charge. We became socialists no doubt about it. We tried to tear down every value system existing. It was going to be the Utopia it was supposed to be.

Then I began to see how rabid the hard liners were. Their agenda wasn’t dedicated to equality and justice, it was only about power. They were the epitome of Big Brother. Thought control and slavery to the system. I detested the religious book burners but they had nothing on the purge of intellectual thought my fellow Democrats were planning. It wasn’t the Conservatives who were so hate filled, it was us.

They hate people who oppose or have the nerve to question them in any degree and vilify every action of those they deem to be heretical. They bludgeon transgressors with the courts and increasingly shrill rhetoric and ad hominem response to any intellectual discussion. Their ultimate aim is deconstruction of the Constitution so they can seize power permanently.

It’s also about the easy money and all the ways to skim from the system. They have their friends and family create fancy sounding foundations or institutes and funnel earmarks into their pockets. They give defense and civil project money to corrupt organizations and corporations where it is funneled back to them and theirs. The republicans have a few bad apples but they are nothing near the democrats in sleeze and corruption.

The real power in the party belongs to the Clinton Machine. It has divided the USA more than any other modern dynamic. It splits the public into easily manipulated factions with race baiting, class envy and economic fear, faux science religionism and crazy ass anti-America fringe groups. The majority of the press belongs to the Clinton Machine. It is that machine, with its totalitarian agenda, that has undermined our rights and created a fascist state inside the Democrat Party and the state at large. I voted for Bill Clinton believing he would bring change. He did, now moderate voices are shouted down within the party and the courts are the new political battleground. Then the whining over “What the eeeevil Republicans have done to our rights”. If anything the Republicans have been complicit with the Clintons in turning a blind eye all kinds of insider crime and not standing up to the skullduggery of the Democrats.

The Jury’s been out on this Pres. for any rational and truthful person but time is peeling back the layers on his conducts. I hoped he would be as good a President as he was a Texas Governor but then he spent too much money trying to buy public sentiment. I marvel that the great public speaker I knew him to be has vanished. Now he appears compromised on all kinds of issues that the public elected him to address, especially immigration and energy. I still believe him to be sincere though. Not a cynic like the democratic leadership.

The only power the people still have is the vote; but what are the choices? So here I am with my eyes open and without the representation I felt I once had. The Clintons are dangerous. Wolves in sheep’s clothing. Hillary’s way or the highway.

No dissent permitted.

The Daily Truth

From Rush Limbaugh.com….

founding_fathers_270.gifRUSH: I have a great, great editorial cartoon here. I don’t know who did this, but you’ve seen the painting of the Founding Fathers in Philadelphia at Constitution Hall, drafting the Constitution, discussing it among themselves. Benjamin Franklin is in there, all these guys. “Gentlemen, I just came up with a brilliant conspiracy,” says one of the founders to the group. “Why don’t we split from the British crown, become founders of a nation that will cause all of the world’s wars, crime, corruption, slavery, disease, torture, murder, assassinations, racism, sexism, violence, environmental destruction, cannibalism, and manmade hurricanes for all eternity? That’s the kind of country we want.”

Benjamin Franklin says, “Yeah, and then steal all their oil.”

Another Founder says, “Sounds like a plan.”

It’s a great, great, great cartoon because this is how libs see America today. It’s exactly how they see it.

Truth-boating the Hillary Campaign, part 2

Truth-boating, Updated

More from the investigative FReeper, Doug from Upland…..

In the ’60s, a Future Candidate Poured Her Heart Out in Letters The New York Times ^ | July 28, 2007 | Mark Leibovich I’ve called Mark Leibovich to give him the rest of the story, but he hasn’t returned my call.

From the above article, you learned about Hillary coming to Winter Carnival at Dartmouth in 1967. Now, here is the rest of the story. In one sentence it is that THE GUY DITCHED THE WITCH.

“She would issue a blanket condemnation of the “boys” she had met (“who know a lot about ‘self’ and nothing about ‘man’ ”) and also tell of an encounter she had with “a Dartmouth boy” the previous weekend…..

….Her letters contain no mention of any romantic interest, except for one from February 1967 in which Ms. Rodham divulges that she “met a boy from Dartmouth and spent a Saturday night in Hanover.”

In her LYING DECLARATION OF APRIL 7, 2006 Hillary claimed to not remember anything that she might have discussed with Peter Paul at the Spago lunch or Gershman tea. Oh, really, Hillary?

Actually, at the Spago lunch, she discussed on film with Peter what happened at Winter Carnival. She went there for blind date. The guy got drunk, took a surfboard to an area with some small slopes, and played on his surfboard. He ditched the witch part way through the blind date. HERE IS THE DISCUSSION ON YOUTUBE FROM THE SPAGO LUNCH

Hillary could remember none of what was discussed at Spago or Gershman’s? In her deposition, she is going to be confronted with 5 hours of home video. “I don’t recall” is not going to fly this time.”

At the Gershman tea, on film Peter is introducing Hillary. He starts to talk about the Dartmouth Winter Carnival when she turns around and says, “Don’t tell everything.” It got the biggest laugh of the day. Nevertheless, the smartest woman in the world could remember nothing.

UPDATE from Dougfromupland :

Clinton defense team tries to avoid oral arguments. Plus…

Doug had two other interesting converstions today. The first was with the NY TIMES reporter who wrote the story of Hillary’s letters when she was at college. Doug provided him with the video of Hillary discussing with Peter at Spago her Dartmouth blind. The guy got drunk, put on his swim trunks, took his surfboard, and was navigating the snow-covered little hills on the golf course. The reporter was astounded that Peter has been able to get extensive home video of Hillary. He could not believe that Hillary would have ever allowed it.

The other call was with Dave Schippers. Dave was very pleased to hear that we are getting closer to the magic day when she is under oath. He was also amazed that Peter is now in possession of the smoking gun video.

A Few Words From Newt, On Our Own Phoney War!

I am always impressed with his brilliant mind.

The Ring Thing

By now nothing that goes on in public schools should surprise me. We live in a through-the-looking-glass world where students are suspended for smoking cigarettes, but can get free condoms from the school nurse, where prayer is not allowed but t-shirts glorifying rap music and its odious messages are commonly worn, and where students graduate knowing how to TM while barely being able to read and speak articulately.

So why should it surprise me that an English school has forbidden a fifteen year old Christian girl from wearing a small silver ring that symbolizes her commitment to chastity until marriage? If you want the details, see this article here, although a Google search of Lydia Playfoot turns up quite a bit of material. Suffice to say, she has been told by the school to remove the ring or face expulsion.

I have two BIG problems with this.

First, this same school allows Muslim girls to wear their head scarves, and Sikh girls to wear the silver bracelets of their faiths. This I have no problem with. Freedom to express one’s religion is a basic human right. But hey, guys, point of order here: don’t Christians have the same rights as Muslims and Sikhs?

And perhaps more importantly, does anyone really think it’s such a hot idea to punish a teenager when she’s actually trying to do the right thing? Anyone who has ever been the parent of a teenager knows what a demoralizing experience this can be. There are just so many ways teens can screw up their lives: drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, gangs. No matter how hard you try to steer them away from these, many just blithely embrace some or all of these self destructive behaviors while regarding their parents as hopelessly out of touch simpletons. Any parent who can shepherd their teen to adulthood while keeping them in one piece has done something to be proud of.

Nowadays this process is harder than ever because there are just so many other influences on teens that parents must now compete with. Peer pressure used to mean the kids at school. Now, thanks to the Internet, it means kids all over the world. Kids are being urged by way too many people to make really, really bad decisions.

So in a world where teenagers kill just because they want to “see what it feels like”, it is refreshing to hear about a girl like Lydia Playfoot, who is actually doing the right thing and encouraging others to do the same. But instead of getting the praise she deserves, all she’s getting is a whole lot of undeserved aggravation. It is a sad indictment of our culture when a teenage girl is turned into a pariah for NOT having sex. The scarlet letter A used to stand for “adulteress”. I guess now it stands for “abstinence”.

In our increasingly secular world, there are many who find her extroverted brand of Christian faith cloying, but that is more of a reflection of our society than it is on her. I find it rather ironic that while the western world is predominantly Christian, Christianity itself is becoming ever more marginalized. Devout Christians are often looked down upon by the intelligentsia as rubes and simpletons. And yet in Muslim, Jewish, and other cultures, religious faith is still viewed as a virtue.

But one does not need to embrace orthodox Christianity to recognize the value of her message, or to be disturbed by the school administration’s attempts to squash that message, which should be regarded as a breath of fresh air. What parent in the world wouldn’t sell their soul just to hear their teen say, “Mom, Dad, I’ve been thinking about it, and I’ve decided not to have sex until I’m married. Is that OK?” In a world where so many influences are telling her to do otherwise, Lydia Playfoot is doing the right thing. Ring or no ring.

THE call letters KUNT have landed at a yet-unbuilt low-power digital television station in Wailuku, Maui. Alarmingly similar to a word the dictionary says is obscene, the call letters were among a 15-page list of new call letters issued by the Federal Communications Commission and released this week.

The same station owner also received KWTF for a station in Arizona.

From Skokie, Ill., comes a sincere apology “to anyone that was offended,” said Kevin Bae, vice president of KM Communications Inc., who requested and received KUNT and KWTF. It is “extremely embarrassing for me and my company and we will file to change those call letters immediately.”

Great moments in socialized medicine

“I could be dead by then.”

Proponents of Hillary-Care, or fans of the propagandist movie “Sicko” would do well to study the actual day to day operation of socialized medicine before trying to impose it upon the United States.

This is the story of Olive Beal: a retired London piano teacher and former activist in the Suffragette Movement, who was told that she must wait eighteen months before she can receive a new hearing aid. At age 108, with failing eyesight and confined to a wheelchair, Mrs. Beal’s 5 year old analog hearing aid no longer functions effectively for her.

Her family said they had been shocked to be told there was an 18-month waiting list by the Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust. A digital hearing aid costs about £1,000 on the open market.

Maria Scott, 52, her granddaughter, said: “After having a hearing test on Wednesday they said, ‘yes, she does need a digital hearing aid, but there is an 18-month waiting list’.

“I would have thought they would take her age into account as she probably has not got 18 months to wait.

“Olive has worked hard from the age of 16 to her late 60s and paid taxes. She has been healthy all her life and lived with her daughter until 15 years ago – she has never sponged off the state. I thought a 108-year-old deserved to be treated better than this.”

Flying pig moment

pigflying.jpgThis may be THE Flying Pig Moment of 2007.

The New York Times has published an editorial by MICHAEL E. O’HANLON and KENNETH M. POLLACK that reflects much of the cautious optimism that we’ve seen since the stabilization of Anbar and the ejection of AQI from Baqubah.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Here is an excerpt:

Here is the most important thing Americans need to understand: We are finally getting somewhere in Iraq, at least in military terms. As two analysts who have harshly criticized the Bush administration’s miserable handling of Iraq, we were surprised by the gains we saw and the potential to produce not necessarily “victory” but a sustainable stability that both we and the Iraqis could live with.

After the furnace-like heat, the first thing you notice when you land in Baghdad is the morale of our troops. In previous trips to Iraq we often found American troops angry and frustrated — many sensed they had the wrong strategy, were using the wrong tactics and were risking their lives in pursuit of an approach that could not work.

Today, morale is high. The soldiers and marines told us they feel that they now have a superb commander in Gen. David Petraeus; they are confident in his strategy, they see real results, and they feel now they have the numbers needed to make a real difference.

As they say……..Read it all

Truth-boating the Hillary Campaign

Doug from Upland provides the timeline (UPDATED), and numerous links to the Peter Paul — Hillary Clinton lawsuit, and campaign finance fraud on a historical level. You might want to bookmark this for further reading. It is well-researched and sourced. See also the Hillary Clinton Accountability Project link in the sidebar “roll”.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Truth-boating:  UPDATE<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Feb. 2000 – Peter Paul is induced to support Hillary’s 2000 Senate campaign with the promise of access to Bill Clinton to be able to make a proposal to come aboard Stan Lee Media as a rainmaker when he left the WH

June 9, 2000 – Paul pays for two Hillary Clinton fundraisers at Spago and the home of Cynthia Gershman … the costs are never declared by the campaign (note: a previous fundraiser through Rendell for Al Gore, paid for by Paul, was also never declared; Rendell also never declared a 150K stock pledge) … at the Spago lunch, Paul spent considerable time with Hillary and discussed his plan for her husband’s employment… see the 20/20 report from 2001…Amazingly, in her declaration of 4-7-06, Hillary acts as if she barely knew Peter Paul and claimed she couldn’t remember anything they might have said. Besides the email comments, Paul has video of her going on and on about how Stan Lee was a genius for hiring Paul. She is really excited about Paul’s idea of a cartoon character of Al Gore, and she wants to talk to Tony Coehlo and Terry McAuliffe about it. Her failure to remember is simply a lie.

June 23, 2000 – Kelly Craighead (a White House employee, not part of any joint funraising committee), Jim Levin, David Rosen (all agents of Hillary and Bill) meet with Aaron Tonken (agent of Paul and fundraiser for Ed Rendell) to originate the idea for a major fundraising event for Hillary as part of the Aug. 14-20 DNC Convention in L.A.

July 11, 2000 – conference call between Peter Paul, Tonken, Craighead, Wolfson, Levin, and Rosen in which Paul is solicited to pay for the Hollywood Gala….he is asked to pay $525K, and it is expected that Cynthia Gershman will pay a like amount….it was acknowledged by all that the fundraiser would cost over a million dollars

Aug. 12, 2000 – Hollywood Gala… it raises a million dollars for Hillary, but it cost over a million dollars…Paul spent several hours with Bill Clinton… here they are putting the final touches on the deal at the after concert dinner Look at all the photos of the gala… Hillary actually said in her declaration of 4-7-06, “I remember Mr. Paul attending the event…” How insulting was that? Actually, she spent hours near him and publicly thanked him from the stage for all he did.

Aug 13 – Paul and his wife Andrea are at the home of Barbra Streisand for Clinton Library donors…when Hillary sees Andrea, she runs over to her, brings her over to Streisand, and introduces her as “the wife of the man who funded last night’s event…my new best friend”… Streisand’s testimony should be interesting… Chelsea came up to the table with Paul, Andrea, Tendo Oto, Oto’s interpreter Jonathon Rogers, Jim Levin, and Haim Saban. Chelsea discussed for at least a half an hour how excited she and her parents were about her dad coming to work for the creator of Spider Man… Hillary sets up her daughter for perjury

Aug. 13 – Tendo Oto and SLM make their deal for Asian partnership Oto gives $5 mil and promises another $5-7 mil in November for the American joint venture…On Aug. 12 he had paid $27K to attend the federal fundraiser gala. Giving money was illegal. Attending was illegal. Since Oto had no social security number to check out when he showed up at the event with his camera crew, the Secret Service said no way. Clinton had the Secret Service stand down, and Oto sat directly behind the president and first lady.

Aug 14 – Ed Rendell calls Peter Paul in a panic. Lloyd Grove is preparing a story for the WASHPOST about Paul’s felony record for “The Cuban Coffee Caper” two decades previous when he was an international attorney in Miami. Rendell tells Paul to deny he gave any money and just play along. Shortly after the warning call, Grove called. Here is the callsheet from SLM, certified by the government as evidence.

Aug 15 – Lloyd Grove writes the story in the WASHPOST about Paul’s felony past from two decades previous involving the Cuban Coffee Caper and defrauding Fidel Castro of $8.7 million … Howard Wolfson vows that they would never take any money from Peter Paul

Aug 17 – Grove writes a second story about $2,000 given by Paul at Spago … Wolfson says they will return the money, and a check is immediately cut and sent to Paul … Wolfson actually admits that the gala cost a million dollars but says it was in-kind and not a check. (Ummm, in-kind is hard money, Howard)

Aug 18 – behind the scenes, while disavowing him in public, the Clintons write personal notes to Paul, dated Aug 18, espressing their gratitude … Hillary: “We will remember it always” Bill’s note Even Chelsea got into the act.

Aug 24 – Campaign Finance Chairman David Rosen is directed to send a fax to Paul asking for another $100,000 (actually, one of several faxes) … Hillary had promised the money for the Working Families Party in New York … Paul will send no more money until he hears it face to face from Bill Clinton that they still have a deal (second document shows Gordon’s acknowledgement that it was “done”)

Sept. 22, 2000 – Clinton steps off AF-1 in Los Angeles (we have photo) and assures Paul that the deal is still a go … Paul has Steven Gordon send a stock transfer of $55K to the Working Families Party for Hillary… we can find no evidence that they ever declared that donation. If the Clintons were disavowing Paul in public, claimed he gave no money, and had no business arrangement with the President as claimed by Hillary, why would the President of the United States be meeting Paul in public as he stepped off AF-1? For what possible purpose? That’s not hard to figure out, is it?

Nov 7 – Hillary is elected

Nov 13 – just six days after Hillary’s election, an agreement for Venture Soft USA Inc is recorded in Illinois between Jim Levin, Clinton’s business adviser, and Tendo Oto … Levin was Clinton’s “eyes and ears” in dealing with Paul, got proprietary business information, and stole the Japanese partner for their own deal

Dec 2000 – Stan Lee Media collapses … the additional $5-7 million promised in November from partner Tendo Oto was not received due to the Clinton/Levin interference In Paul v Clinton, it will be proven that Oto’s money would have kept the company solvent until Clinton came aboard as he had promised Peter Paul.

Early 2001 – Paul discovers that the campaign has filed two fraudulent FEC reports, only reporting 366K for the cost of Event 39 … he spent over a million dollars on it

June 18, 2001 – Paul files initial lawsuit against the Clintons and several others for business fraud

July 3 – Treasurer Andrew Grossman is served with the lawsuit that includes documentation for $1.6 million spent by Paul

July 11 – David Kendall accepts service for Hillary along with the $1.6 million documented expenses

July 18 – press conference at National Press Club . Paul has messenger hand deliver a demand letter to Hillary’s senate office

July 30 – despite Paul’s demand and all of the documentation, a third false FEC report is filed … this time they declare $401K for Event 39 … still no mention of Paul as the real donor

Jan 2005 – criminal indictment of David Rosen is unsealed

May 2005 – Rosen acquitted in criminal trial in Los Angeles…the perjury in this trial was astounding…the judge and prosecutor went out of their way to condemn Paul and claim that Hillary had nothing to do with it is also astounding… FBI affidavit during the trial documenting $1.2 mil from Paul that was not declared. The prosecution does not call Paul, Aaron Tonken, or key witness Kelly Craighead (Craighead was also never called by the FEC – she will be a key witness in Paul v Clinton)…. The prosecution does not use damaging evidence against Rosen obtained while Ray Reggie (brother in law of Ted Kennedy) was wearing a wire. In Tonken’s book, KING OF CONS, he details how he sat in a van with Hillary detailing all of the money that was being spent on her.

Dec 2005 – FEC determines that the campaign deliberately underreported $721,000, fines the campaign a mere $35,000, and orders a new filing…treasurer Andrew Grossman signs conciliation agreement with the FEC, the equivalent of a nolo contendre plea

Jan 2006 – the fourth fraudulent FEC report is filed … among the problems are Stan Lee (whom we have on tape in a deposition swearing that he gave no money) is credited with a 225K donation and Paul is still never named personally as the donor as he has demanded

April 7, 2006 – Hillary removed as defendant but judge made clear to Kendall that she would be testifying … the declaration turned into the court by Kendall for Hillary can only be described as a work of fiction … no reporters attended the hearing and not one mainstream media source wrote that a trial date had been set for defendant Bill Clinton (trial date postponed until appeal is hear to bring Hillary back in as a defendant) … Chelsea will be one of the witnesses called … although her mom claims no knowledge of the business deal, if Chelsea testifies honestly, she will tell how the family stayed up late after the gala playing scrabble and discussing the excitement of daddy going to work for the creator of Spiderman … from a private fundraiser at Zev Braun’s house in early 2000, Paul has home video of Hillary laughing and discussing with him how he had arranged in 1993 for Fabio to chase her around the room and pick her up in a romance pose…the president referenced that event the next year at the Italian-American Foundation Dinner…. her declaration claiming that she met Paul in early 2000 is simply a lie

June 2006 – Senate Ethics Committee announces it will not investigate Hillary and simply relies on the flawed FEC procedure … subsequently, they refuse Paul’s offer to appear and testity

Oct. 18, 2006 – new demand letter for return of over a million dollars is delivered to Hillary’s DC office with copy delivered to Sen. Voinovich, chair of the Senate Ethics Committee

Jan. 10, 2007 – Paul counsel files Appellate Brief to bring Hillary back into the case as a defendant (that delays the trial date for Bill, set for March 27, 2007…it also delays depositions)….no mainstream media source had reported that defendant Bill Clinton had a trial date in a case involving the collapse of Spiderman Stan Lee’s company)

April 2007 – after a two-year battle for the return of evidence, including home videos, an assistant US atty provides Paul with a list of items they will return to him…..included was the “smoking gun video”: July 17, 5-minute conference call, Hillary Clinton….. when the numerous pieces of evidence were finally sent, the shipment did not include that video…..Paul’s counsel argues vehemently for that to be sent….Paul believes that a low-level functionary screwed up by putting that piece of evidence on the manifest — Hillary never thought it would see the light of day…that video was finally sent because they could not deny its possession

June 20, 2007 – look at this page under “Latest Filings” for June 20 briefs and declarations

July 27, 2007 – court notification that oral arguments are set for Sept. 7 before the California Court of Appeals…. a decision on whether Hillary is brought back in as a defendant is expected within 10 days thereafter…. then, it is time for depositions…. if David Kendall loses, he may appeal to the California Supreme Court…..that court had earlier refused to hear the argument about removal of Bill Clinton from the case…. Kendall may be able to delay it for a short time, but depositions are expected to begin this year

More on the Fox News advertiser kerfluffle

Yesterday’s entry about the claim by liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas that he had forced Lowe’s to abandon their advertising on FNC’s Bill O’Reilly show was proven to be just more hot air from the leftist-sphere.

However, a link to Newshounds, provided by n2l, revealed the grand strategy of the left to threaten the advertisers on Fox with a boycott if they do not pull their ads from the eeeeevil Fox.

There is more to this story…

Today’s Jawa Report points to blogger Johnny Dollar’s revelation that the leftists are doing more than just threatening advertisers:

haloscancom-comments_1185739132968.pngBut the most stunning post of the past few weeks may well be from one who calls himself “Marco”, a prolific regular at the pound with a long record of Fox bashing. Regarding the Hilary Clinton “death threat” that appeared on O’Reilly’s website, Marco discusses what blue blogs have found on Mr Bill’s site. But first he makes what could be an astounding admission:

“I posted the one [comment] turned over to the SS [Secret Service]“

So, what was the comment in question?  A phony threat on Hillary Clinton’s life, posted on the O’Reilly website by someone pretending to be a ‘rightwinger.’  Now, by his own admission, we know who that “someone” is.

The Left has become completely unhinged.

Against all odds

Reuters:

Iraq defied seemingly impossible odds to beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the Asian Cup final on Sunday, providing a fairytale ending to the tournament and a rare moment of celebration in their war-torn homeland.

Iraqi captain Younis Mahmoud scored the winner in the 71st minute when he climbed above the defence at the far post and headed a perfectly-weighted corner from Hawar Mulla Mohammed into the net.

Saudi Arabia had been bidding to become the first country to win the Asian Cup four times but were outplayed by an Iraqi team riding high on a wave of national support.

Iraq’s unexpected victory not only captured the imagination of the sporting world but helped unify a country ravaged by war and ripped apart by sectarian violence.

What I hate about the 21st Century

Nuke has invited me to play in his sandbox, and I couldn’t be more flattered and honored. So just to start things off, I thought I’d post this little ditty just so everyone knows where I’m coming from. I’m sure I’ll piss some people off, and hopefully I’ll make some people think. I’m delighted to be here. Thanks, Nuke!

The 21st century is now in its seventh year, and frankly, I don’t see a lot to like. Granted, I’m an avowed antiquarian, who smokes a pipe, uses a pocket watch, and prefers a fountain pen, but nonetheless I knew we were off to a bad start just by the number of morons who thought that the new millennium started in the year 2000. It’s always a bad sign when a significant portion of the population of an industrialized nation can’t even do simple math.

In no particular order here’s a list of things that are pissing me off about the new century.

Suicide bombers: Wait just a minute here, God told you to do what? Sorry pal, that wasn’t God, it was the voices in your head. About the only good thing I can say about these guys is that they can only ply their vile trade once. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of deluded souls out there who really think that God will be pleased with them for killing a bunch of innocent people. This leads me to my next point…

Guantanamo Bay: No, I don’t hate Guantanamo Bay, but I do hate listening to all the liberal bellyaching about it. To me, it’s very simple: if someone has information about a pending terrorist attack, and won’t give up that information willingly, then quite frankly, I don’t care what they do to him, as long as they make him talk. Sure, it’s unpleasant. So is killing innocent people with a suicide bomb. Am I really a right wing radical because I’d rather see a terrorist squeal than watch women and children die? If anything, Guantanamo should be expanded.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: Basically a shill for the Muslim theocracy that really runs Iran. The man says the Holocaust never happened, and then wonders why he has no credibility with the international community. And now he wants nuclear weapons. Anyone with half a brain in their head should find this somewhat chilling. Say what you want about the Cold War, in retrospect both the Americans and the Russians were the epitomes of diplomatic restraint. For all their rhetoric and saber-rattling, both sides in truth realized that blowing up the planet was a bad idea. Not so with Ahmadinejad. I really believe he would start a nuclear holocaust in the name of Allah. One way or another, he has to go. With any luck, the Israelis will do our dirty work for us like they have so many times before.

Kim Jong-il: Essentially the same rant here as for Ahmadinejad. Except I don’t think he’s ever denied the holocaust. But he is building up his military while his people are starving to death. Another one who has to go.

Barry Bonds: Even before the steroids scandal, he was widely known as the Biggest Asshole in Baseball. Now he will probably break the home run record set by Hank Aaron, an honorable man and gifted athlete who endured painful racial slurs throughout his career but played the game the right way. The day he breaks the record, every fan in the park should stand up and turn their back. They won’t, though.

The New York Yankees: I’m a Red Sox fan. I had to sneak that one in here.

Britney Spears: Those familiar with my writing knew I’d get to her sooner or later. It’s not that I hate her, as such. In fact, I kinda feel a little sorry for the little tart. But I hate what she represents: a whole generation of narcissistic teens and twenty somethings who seem to think that they’re entitled to get what they want, when they want it, and preferably not have to pay for it. If they don’t, the result is a temper tantrum. Naturally, teen girls idolize her, apparently without realizing that, unlike Britney, they don’t have the means of getting themselves out of the trouble that emulating her behavior will land them in. Detox costs money, girls. So do babies. So does a divorce. Furthermore, Britney, Paris, and company have turned the women’s movement completely on its ear. They now are easily the equals of men when it comes to boorish behavior. Was that the idea?

George W. Bush: Before you reach for the AK-47, you should know I voted for the guy. Twice. And I still admire his backbone in the face of adversity. But the fact is that through his mismanagement of both the budget and the Iraq war, coupled with an arrogant refusal to listen to the advice of others, he has single handedly delivered the Congress to the Democrats. The Presidency will probably be next. And before any of you “My-President-Right-Or-Wrong” types go reaching for the hand grenades, I would offer you this little factoid to consider: the country is now being run by Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman, and Ted Kennedy. Are you happy about that? Hillary may very well be our next president. Are you happy about that? Thanks a lot, George. This, of course, brings me to my next point.

Nancy Pelosi: Just making sure I piss off everyone here. Nancy Pelosi makes Hillary Clinton look like Margaret Thatcher. A liberal in the worst sense of the word, she is the ugly face of Nanny Government. In the world of Nancy Pelosi, I’m not allowed to smoke a cigar on the beach, but I CAN go to the nearest methadone clinic and get a free fix and syringe. In her world, my kid is not allowed to say a prayer in school, but he CAN get a free condom from the school nurse. And by the way, if I want to send that kid to college, I have to pay for it out of my pocket, while my tax dollars go to giving an illegal immigrant a scholarship. Thanks, Nancy. And thanks again, George.

Outsourcing: Tried calling customer service for Dell or Symantec lately? You get to talk to a pleasant chap with an almost undecipherable Indian accent who calls himself “Harry”. Now, believe me, I have nothing against “Harry”. Like me, he’s just a working stiff who’s trying to feed his family. I’ll bet Harry thinks outsourcing is a pretty nifty idea. But it seems to me that American companies that market the majority of their products to Americans, and make the majority of their money off Americans, should be employing Americans. Is this really such a radical concept?

iPods: This one will probably piss off more people than the ones about George Bush and Nancy Pelosi combined, but I don’t care. To me, it’s a generational thing. Kids today seem to think they have a God Given right to be entertained 24/7, and the iPod epitomizes this. That, along with the relentless marketing which implies that you are a lower form of life if you don’t own one, makes the iPod one of the most odious inventions ever. That, and the fact that I still can’t figure out how to work mine.

Cell phones: I hate these even more iPods. If the iPod symbolizes our culture’s need for non-stop entertainment, than the cell phone symbolizes our culture’s utter abandonment of common courtesy. God forbid someone should actually put the god-damned thing down for two seconds and have a real face to face conversation with someone. The Blackberry and the iPhone belong in the same rubbish bin. Which brings me to my next point:

Text messaging: I’ve actually had teens tell me that they would rather TM someone than have a real conversation, because of all those, like, y’know, awkward pauses. We are raising a generation of kids that are technologically savvy but have no real communication skills. Johnny can’t read, he can barely talk, but he sure can TM.

Nanotechnology: A nano is one millionth of a millimeter. Poison gas made with nanothechnology makes conventional gas masks useless. I don’t know very much about nanotechnology, but it scares the hell out of me. Somewhere out there someone is figuring out how to use this to create a more efficient way of killing lots of people at once. This seems like a rather high price to pay for sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white film.

Political Correctness: This is what the Nancy Pelosis of the world use to stifle free speech. Last time I checked, the First Amendment applies to everyone, not just those who are saying what you want to hear. Calling someone the “N” word is reprehensible, but pointing out the reason there are not more blacks in baseball is because most athletically gifted black youths gravitate to either football or basketball is not. People should learn the difference.

Rap “Music”: I think I hate this more than anything. Rap “music” has probably done more to contribute to the coarsening of American society than any single cultural influence. I know some will condemn me as a racist for saying this, but I do not think it is racist to deplore an “art form” that glorifies violence, misogyny, and irresponsible procreation. Rappers refer to women as “bitches” and “’ho’s”, and not only get away with it, but become stars. Yes, I know the First Amendment protects your right to rap. But it also protects my right to deplore it.

Global Warming: The thing I hate most about this issue is how it’s become completely politicized. The Liberal/Democrat types breathlessly gush about the need to save the planet. Until, of course, someone comes up with idea of planting a wind farm in their backyard. And, naturally, the Conservative/Republican types poo-poo the whole idea because they’ll be damned if they’re going to agree with anything the Liberal/Democrats say. Personally, I think there could be something to the idea, but now that it’s become a political issue, the truth will be the first casualty. In the meantime, the liberals will glom onto this one because it gives them another convenient excuse to expand the Nanny government. I have little faith that the government will be honest and forthcoming with this issue, irrespective of who’s in power. Which brings me to my final point:

The anti-smoking movement: If ever there was something that has brought the notion of Big Brother/Nanny government to full horrendous flower, it is this. Tobacco is a legal product that is enjoyed by millions, but by perpetuating the myth that even transient exposure to second hand smoke is dangerous, the anti-smoking crowd have created an environment in which I have seen my rights eroded, and seen myself degraded to basically one notch above a child molester simply because I enjoy tobacco. Yes, you heard me correctly: I enjoy smoking, as do millions of other people. I know there are risks, but that’s my problem, and my decision. You don’t want to smell the smoke emanating from my pipe? No problem. The fact is that both smokers and non-smokers can easily be accommodated. There is room in any town for smoking and smoke free establishments. But no, we can’t have that. Henry Waxman doesn’t like tobacco, therefore nobody can like tobacco. And now even employers are getting into the act. The Scots company recently fired an employee because he was a smoker. NOT for smoking on the job, mind you. Just for being a smoker! He was fired for engaging in a legal activity on HIS OWN TIME. Just remember this: if Big Brother can take away my pipe, he can take away your little vice, too.

So there it is: my take on the 21st century. Now, without further ado, I’m going to turn off the computer, light my pipe, wind my pocket watch, and spend the next hour reading something by Arthur Conan Doyle.

RIP: Lowe’s

A few years ago, Lowe’s built a shiny new store less than a mile from my home.

Oh yeah!

Nuke’s Toy Store. Heh.

Sunday afternoon strolls through the Home Improvement Section, checking out the power tools, shopping for landscaping junk in the Garden Center: Lowe’s is cool. Their prices aren’t spectacular, but the variety of name brands, and a clean new store means that my dollars have gone to Lowe’s much more frequently than they have gone to the locally owned building and supply store a few miles farther down the road.

Having said all that, you can understand that my decision to no longer patronize Lowe’s is a tough one.

But not that tough.

Lowe’s decision to pull their ad dollars from the top-rated show on cable tv is going to have consequences. Frankly, I don’t give two hoots about the Bill O’Reilly Show. But by bowing to the extortionists at the Daily POS, Lowe’s has just gone to the top of Nuke’s Shite List. I won’t be shopping there anymore. Period.

And, when I consider that I have bought a new roof, hot water heater, washer and dryer, dishwasher, microwave, and various sundry other tools, supplies, etc over the last couple of years at Lowe’s, it is not an insignificant amount of money. Of course, it won’t mean a flip to a big outfit like Lowe’s. But, it sure will matter to the locally-owned store that stands to benefit from my patronage.

UPDATE: Mike C and Ann have put the GCP fact-checker on my azz.

Uh, it seems that the Lowe’s decision pre-dates the Daily POS/MoveOn boycott by several months….

Oh, well. It’s still a good rant.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) – An oral surgeon who played a practical joke on his assistant, and got sued for it, ended up getting the last laugh Thursday.Dr. Robert Woo, of Auburn, temporarily implanted fake boar tusks in his employee’s mouth while she was under anesthesia and took photos that later made the rounds. The employee felt humiliated and quit, later suing her boss. When Woo’s insurance company wouldn’t deal with the lawsuit, Woo settled out of court for $250,000 – and sued the insurers. A King County Superior Court jury agreed with him and awarded him $750,000 dollars.

The insurance company won on appeal. But the state Supreme Court on Thursday restored the award for Woo. The court decision was 5-4.

I couldn’t find a picture of the boar’s tusks. Heh.

Cautious Optimism

Ralph Peter’s column in the NY Post manages to capture many of the thoughts and ideas that we have discussed over the past few weeks regarding Iraq.

Here are a few excerpts from Mr. Peters’ piece, Winning In Iraq (and losing in Washington).

A trusted source in Baghdad confirmed several key developments that’ve gone largely unreported. Here’s what’s been happening while “journalists” focused on John Edwards’ haircuts:

* Al Qaeda lost the support of Iraq’s Sunni Arabs. The fanatics over-reached: They murdered popular sheiks, kidnapped tribal women for forced marriages, tried to outlaw any form of joy and (perhaps most fatally, given Iraqi habits) banned smoking. In response, the Arab version of the Marlboro Man rose up and started cutting terrorist throats.

* Since the tribes who once were fighting against us turned on al Qaeda, our troops not only captured the senior Iraqi in the organization – which made brief headlines – but also killed the three al Turki brothers, major-league pinch-hitters al Qaeda sent into Iraq to save the game.
Oh, and it emerged that the Iraqi “head” of the terrorists was just a front – in the words of one Army officer, Omar al Baghdadi was “a Wizard of Oz-like creation designed to give an impression that al Qaeda has Iraqis in its senior ranks.”

* Al Qaeda has been pushed right across Anbar, from the once Wild West to the province’s eastern fringes. The terrorists are still dug in elsewhere, from the Diyala River Valley to a few Baghdad neighborhoods – but, to quote that senior officer again, “our forces have been taking out their leaders faster than they can find qualified replacements.”

Even the Democrats yearning to become president admit, when pressed, that al Qaeda’s a threat to America. So why didn’t even one of them praise the success of our troops during their last debate?

But let’s be fair: Congressional Republicans, terrified of losing their power and glory and precious perks, haven’t rushed to applaud our progress, either. They’ll give up Iraq, as long as they don’t have to give up earmarks.

* It isn’t only al Qaeda taking serious hits. After briefly showing the flag, Muqtada al-Sadr fled back to Iran again, trailed by his senior deputies. Mookie’s No. 2 even moved his family to Iran. Why? Though he’s been weak in the past, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is now green-lighting Iraqi operations against the Jaish al Mahdi, the Mookster’s “Mahdi Army.”

It was Michael Yon’s recent dispatch, 7 Rules, 1 Oath, expressing the cautious optimism that the Iraqis can make it, that raised the hopes of many of us who actually want the US to prevail. At what point, I wonder, will the facts on the ground begin to outweigh the rhetorical surrealism that infects the idiot party?

Imagine the surprise of the Telluride, CO town council when the vacation cancellations began pouring in.

Within hours of the council’s vote calling for impeachment of President Bush and VP Cheney, hundreds of ski vacationers showed their displeasure by voting with their dollars. Chaa-Ching……..

“It’s huge, unbelievable,” said Telluride Mayor John Pryor. “Ski groups are canceling for the winter. Hundreds of people are bailing. The (town) Web site is flooded with people saying they’re canceling their vacations here.”

I love it.

A proper fisking

Linkfest Haven, the Blogger's OasisAbout 10 years ago, my business required a great deal more windshield time than it does now: time spent listening to a lot of talk radio. I recall a question that Rush Limbaugh posed to his audience, “Why did the Republicans lose the ’96 Presidential election?” Several callers attempted to answer the question, but no one had “the” answer. If El Rushbo answered his question on-air, then it was after I had gotten out of the car, so I never learned his response.

If I could have had an opportunity to give a response, my answer would have been this:

“The Republicans lost the ’96 Presidential election because the Rush Limbaugh TV show went off the air around the beginning of the campaign season in 1995.”

Rush’s TV show was a fact-checker’s delight. It exposed the hypocrisy and corruption of the idiot party in a way that only the visual media can. In the pre-internet days of the Clinton Administration, Rush single-handedly kept the the light of truth shining brightly into those roach-laden corners and crevices.

I was thinking about those days after reading the NY Sun’s total smack-down of the recent fund raising letter penned by Bill Clinton and Chuck Schumer. The Sun is the voice of reason in a sea of liberal insanity. The editorial is a fisking of the highest order, and deserves as much exposure as we can give it.

Here is a link. I’m sure that you will want to read it all.

Bullet-Riddled Body of S. Korean Found

Religion of Peace™ Update:

The bullet-riddled body of a South Korean hostage was found by police Wednesday in central Afghanistan after a purported Taliban spokesman said the militants had killed one of the captives.

The male victim had 10 bullet holes in his head, chest and stomach, and was discovered in the Mushaki area of Qarabagh district in Ghazni province, said police officer Abdul Rahman.

The Taliban spokesman said earlier that the hostage was was killed because Afghan authorities hadn’t met their demands to release other militants from prison.

This is cold-blooded murder.
