Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have been spotted by British troops crossing the border into southern Iraq, The Sun tabloid reported on Tuesday.
Britain’s defence ministry would not confirm or deny the report, with a spokesman declining to comment on “intelligence matters”.
An unidentified intelligence source told the tabloid: “It is an extremely alarming development and raises the stakes considerably. In effect, it means we are in a full on war with Iran — but nobody has officially declared it.”
“We have hard proof that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have crossed the border to attack us. It is very hard for us to strike back. All we can do is try to defend ourselves. We are badly on the back foot.”
The Sun said that radar sightings of Iranian helicopters crossing into the Iraqi desert were confirmed to it by very senior military sources.
In response to the report, a British defence ministry spokesman said: “There is evidence that explosive devices used against our troops in southern Iraq originated in Iran.”

After we settle a few matters with AQ, perhaps closer scrutiny can be paid to the Iranian border.
The IRI declared war on us twenty eight years ago, I don’t think anything has changed, other than the methods, and proxies.
Land mines
I think Iran could move an entire division across the border and our leaders would claim “its not clear whether they were acting under the authority of the Iranian government or not”.
Thats the reason we use for not responding appropriately to Iranian made shaped charges finding their way to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Just like there’s apparently no actionable “proof” they are supplying Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Islamic Union in Somalia with weapons…..even when the Kurds blew up a train in Turkey that was carrying hundreds of Rockets from Iran to Syria, Iran’s denial that they loaded the train was apparently good enough to keep anyone, including the complicit NATO Turks from pushing the issue.
What does Iran have to do to draw a military response? Kidnap British soldiers….well no I guess thats not Casus Belli material either these days. Maybe if they swarmed and sunk a Carrier……but thats a big maybe.
And I voted for the guy that promised me Iran would not go Nuclear on his watch….. so far all I’ve gotten out of the deal is some half-ass Carter style sanctions. Like there’s a mountain of historical evidence that sanctions stop rogue regimes from achieving their nuclear goals. According to Debka, the fuel rods from Russia arrived at the Bushehr reactor June 11th….the same day Bush was partying with Putin at the G8……so you take it off the future target list….wouldn’t want to piss of the enviromentalists.
Dang RT. I sure do love it when you get riled up.
If Iran couldn’t kick Saddam’s sorry ass, I’m not sure what they think they are going to accomplish.
Well man, I just got a feeling George is going to try to drag out this diplomatic sanctions joke for the next 18 months, and pass this problem off to the next administration.
And its not that I take lighting up Iran lightly…..I know it could get ugly fast…..and it scares me the way they are begging for an azz whippin. They could very well already have black market nukes screwed onto the long range Ukrainian cruise missiles we know they have. Israel and the Gulf states might not survive their response. We might lose some ships if they are caught out in the narrow gulf. We might have to cluster bomb millions of them if they make a death charge for the 12th Imam…… but no matter how bad it is now…..whats it gonna be like in 20 years when they have a hundred nukes stockpiled.
If we dont have the courage to pull the trigger in the next few months…..you know we never will once they declare or test a device…..and I dont want to have to explain to my grand-children why they cant live downwind of former American urban centers.
This is OUR fight, not our grand-children’s.
I believe that Iran is getting squeezed very, very tightly by the sanctions, and the prez wants to give the sanctions (and presumably some of the freedom fighters) a chance to break the shackles the mullahs have over the people.
The military would be keeping a very close eye indeed on movement inside of Iran, and I’m sure we have people sneaking and peeking there.
And, yeah, if they want to make a death charge for a glorious martyrdom, I would hate to violate their religious beliefs and withhold it from them.
Surgically targeted nuclear tipped Tomahawk missiles followed by some Moabs on the nuclear facilities.
Trent Lott: Bad for America!
yeah, too bad he’s not up for re-election for 4 more yrs
Iranian regime heavyweight gunned down.
Haven’t looked for independent confirmation because I have an appointment that actually requires me to leave the house and wear clothing aside from the ubiquitous shorts and T-shirt.
