Chavez ups the ante

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez urged soldiers on Sunday to prepare for a guerrilla-style war against the United States, saying that Washington is using psychological and economic warfare as part of an unconventional campaign aimed at derailing his government.

Dressed in olive green fatigues and a red beret, Chavez spoke inside Tiuna Fort — Venezuela’s military nerve-center—before hundreds of uniformed soldiers standing alongside armored vehicles and tanks decorated with banners reading: “Fatherland, Socialism, or Death! We will triumph!”…

Under Chavez, Venezuela has recently purchased some $3 billion worth of arms from Russia, including 53 military helicopters, 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles, 24 SU-30 Sukhoi fighter jets.Last week, Chavez said he is considering arms purchases, including submarines and a missile-equipped air defense system, as he prepares for a tour of Russia, Belarus and Iran.“We are strengthening Venezuela’s military power precisely to avoid imperial aggressions and assure peace, not to attack anybody,” he said Sunday. source

When I read about banners saying “Socialism or Death”, peace is the first thing I think about.

  1. Michael Yon’s latest installment is up, along with his report on Al Qaeda’s fight against moral turpitude:

Other AQI edicts included beatings for men who refused to grow beards, and corporal punishments for obscene sexual suggestiveness, defined by such “loose” behavior as carrying tomatoes and cucumbers in the same bag.

I’ve always known that anybody that carries tomatoes and cucumbers together is up to no good. The vegans here probably carry them together all the time. Sluts.

  2. What is particularly annoying is the way that some of the senior Al Qaeda members are vying for positions in Hillary’s Health Care initiative if she gets elected:

On the evening of the 24th I spoke with a local Iraqi official, Colonel Faik, who said the Muftis would order the severance of the two fingers used to hold a cigarette for any Iraqis caught smoking. Other reports, from here in Diyala and also in Anbar, allege that smokers are murdered by AQI.

That groveling for approval and favors from Hillary just makes me a little nauseated.

  3. Chavez’s economy is collapsing around him. Guess he has to have an enemy to unite against. Idiot.

  4. I would expect the people in the countries bordering his would be getting a little nervous.

  5. At Hot Air: That’s gonna leave a mark.

  6. WASHINGTON – A judge in the U.S. capital lost his $54 million lawsuit on Monday against a dry cleaner over a pair of misplaced pants and will have to pay the defendants’ trial fees.

He should be made to wear an “I am a moron!” sign out on the street, as well.
