Okefenokee Fires (Update)

I think Ed Mahmoud was saying that there’s a good chance of some rain moving in from the Carolinas. Sure hope he’s right.

Hang in there, friends.

Crews already battling more than 200 wildfires across Florida faced a new threat Tuesday as a huge blaze in Georgia moved toward the state line and a smaller fire crossed it.

Besides the sheer number of fires, high wind and tinder-dry conditions made it difficult to battle the Florida blazes, which had covered about 78 square miles, or 50,000 acres. Authorities evacuated about 200 homes in north Florida on Tuesday and hundreds more residents were on evacuation standby.

“The weather expected is red-flag conditions for all of Florida,” said Jim Harrell, a state Division of Forestry spokesman.

  1. The last update on the wildfire coming out of the Okefenokee towards Taylor, the firefighters were reporting that entire bushes were being sucked up out of the ground by the updraft and carried as far as 3/4 of a mile ahead of the main fire to fall to the ground in flames, along with a rain of burning twigs, branches, and burning pinecones starting spot fires.

  2. In our area, we’re projected to get 1/2″ of rain, at most (or about 2 days worth of evaporation from the ground). The ones farther west *might* get 1/4 inch (or one day worth of evaporation). The fires are burning underground in the peat moss as well as above ground.

  3. Sheesh. My area has been downgraded to 1/4 inch of rain *at most*, and farther west less than 1/4 inch of rain, unless it turns tropical in which case we have the prospect of more rain (and more lightning). I, um, never thought I’d be sayin’ “yeah, let’s have us a hurricane NOW!”

  4. We’ve had …..cough, cough…smoke down here all day. More tomorrow as the storm feeds it our way. Stinks, but nice sunrise and sunset :)

  5. The winds are changing direction tomorrow, and the smoke (and fires) will be heading in our direction. I think I might hold off on shampooing the carpet tomorrow morning.

My lil’ brother, up in the KCMO area, has evacuated from flooding. His 2nd job is remodeling, so this will be VERY good for business.

  6. Hope you’re all O.K.
It suere makes Wales sound like a very safe place to be. fires are started here but are pretty much kept under control.

  7. Baker county fire.

We haven’t had much in the way of thunderstorms yet this year; when they start firing up, the fires in the southeast will REALLY start to burn.

  8. Well, it did it again, only this time, the light show and thunder kept me awake, unlike Monday night.
Don’t know how much rain came with it, but looking out the window at the small lake in the parking lot, I would say a whole bunch.
    Feast or famine, Swampie.
I remember when we first met online, several years ago, your dsl was all blinkie, as the water from all of your rains was flooding the phone switch boxes.

  9. Heh. Yep. I couldn’t mow the grass because it was about a foot underwater, the neighbor’s catfish were swimming all over my pasture, the sheep and horses were confined/trapped in the barn, and I had to wade in and out of knee-deep/deeper water to get the feed to the livestock.

    This is better.

  10. How far into the swamp is the fire as of today? I heard the east entrance was closed.

  11. I don’t think anybody knows exactly, Jim. Moniac is being evacuated today. Looks like people living around the Folkston entrance are being evacuated as well:

US 1 remains closed from Waycross, GA to Folkston, GA except for local residents (must show identification). Route 177 is closed south of Hwy 121. Okefenokee Swamp Park and Dixon Memorial State Forest/WMA are closed. The Okefenokee NWR, including the visitor center and refuge headquarters, is closed as of May 8th. Charlton County Schools are closed today.

A mandatory evacuation is in effect for the Davis Community, located approximately 8 miles west of Folkston, Georgia.

A precautionary evacuation has been ordered for the areas including: Chesser Island Road from the swamp boundary to Hwy 121, north on Hwy 121 to El Terrace Road north to Grace Chapel Road to Spanish Creek Road south to Dinkins Road back to the swamp boundary. This includes some portions of the City of Folkston and the City of Homeland. Only the areas of the cities west of Hwy 121 are affected by this order. A precautionary evacuation means residents in the affected area should begin to prepare to evacuate now and be prepared to evacuate on short notice within the next 12-24 hours when notified.

If you’re familiar with the area, you’ll note Taylor southwest of Moniac, and it has been evacuated too (outside of the swamp park); Folkston is @ 35 miles from Moniac. How much of the fire is contiguous, if any, I don’t know; I don’t *think* it is.

  12. [...] brings this report: US 1 remains closed from Waycross, GA to Folkston, GA except for local residents (must show [...]
