AL-QAEDA leaders in Iraq are planning the first “large-scale” terrorist attacks on Britain and other western targets with the help of supporters in Iran, according to a leaked intelligence report.Spy chiefs warn that one operative had said he was planning an attack on “a par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki” in an attempt to “shake the Roman throne”, a reference to the West, according to The Times newspaper in the UK.Another plot could be timed to coincide with Tony Blair stepping down as prime minister, an event described by Al-Qaeda planners as a “change in the head of the company”.The report, produced earlier this month and seen by The Sunday Times, appears to provide evidence that Al-Qaeda is active in Iran and has ambitions far beyond the improvised attacks it has been waging against British and American soldiers in Iraq. There is no evidence of a formal relationship between Al-Qaeda, a Sunni group, and the Shi’ite regime of President Mah-moud Ahmadinejad, but experts suggest that Iran’s leaders may be turning a blind eye to the terrorist organisation’s activities,” reports The Times. sources:(UK) The Daily Telegraph, TimesOnline(UK)
I heard Steve Emerson talking about this on TV this morning. He believes the threat is credible, but that the weapon would more likely be a “dirty bomb” than a nuke. Either way, this is not good news.
Also of interest is the portion of the report that I highlighted –
“There is no evidence of a formal relationship between Al-Qaeda, a Sunni group, and the Shi’ite regime of President Mah-moud Ahmadinejad.” –
Well, there is evidence, and there is evidence. The weaponry, training, shelter and support from Iran to both Shia and Sunni insurgents has been fairly well documented. Whether or not this would be admissible evidence in an American or British Criminal Court is one thing. But, whether it constitutes substantiated and actionable intelligence is quite another. I think it is a bit disingenious of The Telegraph to hang their hat on the “no evidence” mantra.
Emboldened by their successful embarrassment of the British Navy last month, the Iranian mullahcracy’s willingness to play nuclear poker raises the stakes considerably. I think it’s time for the Brits to go all-in, no-bluffing. A list of governmental, military, commercial, and religious targets should be identified and communicated to the mullahs as being marked for complete and utter physical destruction in the event of any type of nuclear detonation on British interests; making it clear that the weaponry of choice would be nuclear.

But Nuke! That would be so unfair! There could be no attack on England in the absence of evidence! Besides, several of their people have surrendered to Iran again and again and again what with the various teacher’s unions and journalist’s unions supporting hezbollah and condemning Israel, so how could there possibly be a plot against England? It would kill Muslims! Disinformation by the eeeevil Cowboy, that’s what this is!
Sigh. Lots of people who have never had occasion to find out what happens when you unilaterally back down from somebody intent on doing you harm, and the lesson will be very painful.
Turning a blind eye to their activities? Bwahahahaha. That’s funny right there.
Has anyone told the Democrats yet? I’m sure they would be excited for any opportunity to surrender.
Ah yes. Time to invoke The Reid Doctrine™
If there is any substance to this “leak” rather than just a case of smoke and mirrors, it’ll be very interesting to see how that idiot Gordon Brown, most likely to be our next PM, will react.
I would dearly like my country to have the honour of blowing Iran’s nuclear plants into the sand. We may not have the largest military on the planet but one thing we DO have is nukes.
We also need something to restore some pride back into our military after the recent embarrassing hostage fiasco. That entire episode was a complete shambles.
scarey but necessary post my friend!..If the dhimmis keep giving in to them what shall they expect in return..we have NO one to thank but our weak willed selves…….arggg!
#4 Nuke.
The Miserable Little Twerp is at it again today.
Jeez. Nevada should be ashamed.
Some will say this is just Bush building up his reasons to go after Iran. Al-Qadea are just about everywhere these days, so why should it be a stretch to think they are working inside Iran? Sounds logical to me. It’s also no surprise that they want to explode a suitcase bomb or anything they can to cause terror for the West. The US would be their first target but the fact that they are advertising ahead of time that it will be the UK, maybe shows they can’t get to the US. There is a terror element in the issuing of these threats.
This is leaked intelligence?
I don’t know…two things about this bother me. The first is the leak, as that is never acceptable. Secondly, something about the info doesn’t seem quite right, and may be the reason it was a “leak.”
Maybe there is creditable info to indicate an attack, and the intel was leaked to scare the terrorists off, or to highten the populations observations of suspicious activity.
If the IRI knew the UK intelligence knew what they were planning, would they actually go ahead with such an attack, and risk certain and devastating retaliation?
And does Al Qaida in Iraq have the capability to reach into the UK for such an attack?
I don’t know, the smell test is getting mixed aromatic signals.
I’m against leaked documents also. I must have skipped over that fact. You could be right. Using information like this to deter the terrorists? Maybe. But I’m beginning to smell something fishy also.
Hunh. When there was a reference to “the Roman throne”, I thought perhaps that meant they were planning an attack on the Pope and/or Vatican. Seems odd that the report wasn’t quashed, though.
As you say, odd that such a secret report was leaked.
Apparently they didn’t get Mo’s memo. The Roman throne when Mo showed up was the Byzantines. They fell in the 15th century. The third Rome is Moscow…..the successor to the Christian Orthodox church. Not a good idea
Hunh. So the leak to the papers was to give the Russkis an unofficial heads up since Britain is officially p*ssed over Litvinenko?
/Dang, Bonz, I think I accidentally sprained the logic when I was twisting it over that.
Or, maybe Al Qaeda is just busily coveting the advanced plumbing techniques of the early Romans.

Frankly, they say whatever the Western press will print. It works. Suicide in Islam is a sin…..but the boys on top have twisted the meaning into some sort of noble act. They let anyone into paradise these days
Yeah, that getting into the paradise thang with all the virgins just doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of appeal to the head terrorists who seems to prefer their sheep, goats, and camels here on earth.
Of course, there is the fact that they can make any sort of crazya** pronouncement that they wish and are able to laugh themselves silly while the western governments run around in circles trying to alleviate every possible threat while not accomplishing much besides expending funds. And then they can go ahead and make another pronouncement, and assess that, and another, and assess that….
/I think some regrettable accidents should begin to happen inside the countries that harbor/fund the terrorists. If selected parts of their infrastructure gets all broken, they won’t have as much spare cash.
Good analysis SwampWoman. I want to see a video of Osoma bin Ladin. I think he’s dead.
Nuke, you were one of the first to join the McCaine team. I’m joining now. “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.”
If one were to look at symbolic reference to the Roman Throne, could it not refer to the most powerful nation at the present time? If so, the attack is likely meant for the United States. In addition, if one were to infer a “change in the head of the company” to mean the change in presidency for 2008, I’d say we’re looking at a fairly sizable attack timed within a month, two, or three after Nov 2008 (in the United States). If they want to shake us to our core, I’d go so far as to say one attack will occur at the Inaugural Address in Jan 2009. Just my guess.
He was elected as Labour leader on June 25, 2007, though he ran unopposed. I don’t know how you imagine someone could “inherit” such a role. It’s not like the monarchy.
