Arson!

California authorities are reporting that the fire in Orange County was deliberately set.  They have pinpointed the source of the fire to a stolen vehicle which was set on fire, spreading to the surrounding area.  More than 2000 acres have burned.

The fire, stoked by hot dry winds and fueled by chaparral, spread south and west quickly in an unincorporated part of Orange County and threatened multimillion-dollar homes here and in Anaheim Hills, about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Authorities said the blaze may have been started by a vehicle fire, and were investigating if the car was stolen and set on fire to destroy evidence.

Two firefighters have suffered minor injuries.

  1. I believe there have been several terrorist acts like this one that are being covered up to “keep us calm.”

  2. From what I’ve heard the arson was to the vehicle, not a purposely set wildfire. There’s a big difference there Mick. If someone wanted to torch the woods, there are simpler ways.

  3. well, if they wanted to cover up a deliberately set forest fire, this would do it.

  4. Heh. You mean like pulling over to the side of the road in some dry weeds and having your catalytic convertor start a fire?

  5. Not buying the terrorist angle at all. And why go to the trouble of stealing a vehicle just to start a fire? It’s arson because the vehicle was burned on purpose, it just spread to the forest. Probably an insurance scheme on the vehicle.

  6. What the heck exactly IS chaparral? If it is anything like creosote bush, those are some hot, fast-spreading fires. I think it just indicates the type of groundcover whose presence indicates land that burns frequently.

  7. The area around there burns so often nothing ever gets very big. It is really a desert there, and the ground cover (weeds) burn hot and fast.

  8. I’m surprised that firefighters go there; when I lived in Arizona, if you lived outside of town, firefighting and your house burning down was your problem, too bad, so sad.

  9. SwampMan is a radio-controlled airplane enthusiast. He bought a new airplane Sunday and immediately got it stuck about 40 feet up in an oak tree. He is very, very unhappy and I’m struggling to keep the properly somber expression on my face as I contemplate the new tree decoration, and give him upbeat assessments like “Well, honey, maybe a hurricane will blow that tree right down into the living room and you can get your plane back this summer. Unless a tornado sucks it up first.”

  10. You have a great mean streak there Swamps.

  11. I just went out and offered to bring him the shotgun and maybe he could shoot it down. I, uh, think I’m going to go to the track now and stay for a loooong time.

  12. Have fun Swamps. Though it sounds like you already are.
