Howdy Nuke, Swampie, No2Libs, and all!
Thanks for visiting my blog Nuke. So far what I have seen of your blog has been worth my trip across this vast Internet. You are correct in your assumption that I have lived most of my life in different areas of Illinois(with a three-year stopover in New Mexico as a kid). I have never really lived in the actual south although, my late mother spent several years of her early life living in Louisiana and the surrounding territories until they moved back to Illinois in her teens. And though I have visited the South the farthest South I have ever lived in (excluding the SW in NM) is Southern Illinois, near the Kentucky border (though you got to cross the river to get into KY). As to the CornBread reference in my ID, most people around here have no idea what real cornbread is. They consider cornbread a sweet cake substance of flour with a small amount of corn meal, such as Jiffy Mix. It is good, but I was taught how to make cornbread by my mother and her cornbread recipe does not resemble Jiffy Mix in taste or texture. Though for heart-healthy reasons bacon grease has been replaced by vegetable oil.
As to your Scalawag query over on my blog: Words, like life, evolve and the meaning takes on new significance depending on time and place. My assumption, since you are probably referring to Southern expressions, is the definition of Scalawag that in the south referred to the Carpetbaggers from the Civil War. Most were considered pretty disreputable (northern sympathizers) that joined the Republican party of the time to help further rape the south of its pride and wealth. Since then the word has often evolved into a more general usage of corrupt politicians. Corrupt politicians are something we here in Illinois are very familiar with. (In current Illinois politics, pick a party politician and you have picked a scoundrel or a scalawag.) Pick anyone of our last three Governors (two Republicans and the current a Democrat) and you will find Politicians trying to give new meaning to the words Scoundrel and Scalawag. The 17th district of which I live in is full of Scalawags and cheats. LMAO, even the district design is crooked. One news source rated it the most gerrymandered district in the nation. The Republicans in out State sold out their constituents in the district to secure other regions more important to their survival. The Democrats in the District have also sold out their constituents, only in a different manner. Despite the district being more similar to Southern Democrats our officials vote to push East Coast Democrat agendas. It has been led by do-nothing Congressman Lane Evans for over twenty years, who stepped down and was replaced by his protégé, Phat Phil, without a real Democratic Primary election actually taking place. Phat Phil was appointed/elected by the Democratic committeemen after Evans, who has had Parkinson’s Disease for several terms and years, decided just days after running unopposed in the Primary election he was no longer capable of serving another term. He stepped aside and gave his assistant, Phat Phil, a political push to all his friends. Since Evans claimed he was unable to complete the proper paperwork in time, the Primary could not be redone. So the local committeemen who all owe their political life to the good old boy network that has kept Evans in power for the last twenty years, elected the Democratic candidate. They elected Phat Phil, despite the fact that on all voter polls he ranked next to last among voters (pulling in about ten percent of the vote) choice among the people that announced interest in the job after Evans retired. Phat Phil ran against the unexciting lethargic sacrificial-lamb Republican candidate and promptly stomped her into the ground. (Actually anyway you want to define scalawag it fits the definition of current Illinois politicians.)
Or if you are talking pre-Civil War, a scalawag was just basically a runt of the litter or a dishonest person. But that definition is nowhere near as much fun to talk about. Or do you have another I am unaware of. I am always interested in definitions of words that I am unfamiliar with.
Have a good one.
Have a great day Nukester and stop by my haunt too when ya get a few seconds…u should see the video I posted…arggggggg.
The old Peanut Farmer sure hasn’t made any friends lately.
WASHINGTON — Jimmy Carter has accused an international Jewish human rights group of “falsehood and slander” for launching a petition that resulted in thousands of signatures being sent to the former president in protest of his controversial book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Here’s the story.
Hey, Coz! Robert D, ain’t that something? It’s the Joooooos fault! (Presumably for bringing HIS falsehoods and slander into the light of day.)
Hi Swamps! Looks like he’s about to hit bottom, and he’s still diggin’.
If he digs long enough, he might make it to North Korea.
It probably is his next destination. Can we question his intentions then?
I was thinking about that lady astronut today, and the (circumstantial) case against her for attempted murder, and wondering what case could be built against ME if the police diligently searched my vehicle. BB gun? Hell no, loaded handgun. Knife? Yeah, one or two or so are generally rattling around in the globe box, console, and purse. Diapers? Only when there is a baby on board. Trash bags? Yep, never know when it might start to rain and something might need to be wrapped up to keep it dry. Surgical tubing? Not right now, but have carried it around in the past for tube feeding newborn lambs and clearing feed blockages when something is choking. Club? Yep, old trusty MP club in a pocket on the door. Comes in real handy for whacking dogs that are threatening to bite. In addition, there’s the duct tape, rope, chain, and emergency change of (vacuum-sealed) clothes from last year’s hurricane season preparation (so THAT’S where that T-shirt went).
Yep, I’m obviously just looking for somebody to kill.
I don’t need to question ol’ Jimmy’s intentions. He’s talked himself into being an Arab supporter a looooooong time ago when that money came in.
Yeah, I know what you mean about all the junk in the vehicles. My wife is a wildlife rescuer & rehaber (guess that makes me one too
) Just about anything one would need to survive can be found in our vehicles. I think they’re throwing everything at her the astronut, to see what sticks. I don’t think there should be any charges just yet, but a very long mental evaluation.
About Carter. Senile old Bastid needs to be committed!
Pelosi Blames Bush Administration for Media Reports on Use of Military Plane
WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused the Bush administration on Wednesday of publicly mischaracterizing her need for a larger military aircraft to travel back and forth from the West coast.
She said reports filtering out into the media regarding inquiries about the use of a military plane nearly the size of Air Force One for her travel to and from Washington, D.C., shows a “misrepresentation that could only be coming from the administration … one would wonder why the practice deemed to be necessary from a security standpoint would be mischaracterized in the press.”
Imagine That!
Barry aims for gun-ban hiatus

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
February 7, 2007
Shocking huh? That’s what I thought too. Yes, this is “The” Marion Barry and he’s talking about Washington D.C. Seems he had a little trouble at his residence recently, so he would now like to change the rules, sort of.
The Washington Times has the story.
Pretty amazing, huh? I think they just need to give people the opportunity to fight back against the bad guys.
Well that was good timing. Just got back here. Yes, they need to allow the Law Abiding to have guns and the crime rate will go down. I found it ironic though, that Marion Barry gets robbed at gunpoint and decides to change the laws. Can he even own a gun, being an ex felon, or is that a California law?
Hey, Nuke! Check out Inconvenient Kyoto Truths by George Will at Newsweek.
Heh. I was wondering that about him myself. And was it a robbery, or just drug dealers collecting their money?
I’d go with the latter….
Good article Swamps. Bushco had quite a reach back in ’97 to influence the Senate like that.
