The spy, his wife and his contact: A slow nuclear attack.

A new radiation alert was issued last night after it emerged that a second man on the hit-list handed to the former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has been poisoned.

Tests have also shown that Mr Litvinenko’s wife, Marina, has been exposed to radiation, although John Reid, the Home Secretary, said last night that there was “no reason for concern in the short term”.

Mario Scaramella, an Italian investigator who had lunch in a sushi bar with Mr Litvinenko and flew back to Britain to help police on Tuesday, has been found with a “significant amount” of the same radioactive element in his body.

The Health Protection Agency said Mr Scaramella, whom it did not officially name, had received quantities of polonium 210 “likely to be of concern for [his] immediate health”.”

Telegraph.

This story is gripping the U.K. – a real life ‘cold war’ 007 thriller. 12 sites in London show traces of polonium 210 and at least two British Airways Aircraft have been grounded.

Who dunnit? Well some say Putin is the paymaster but others believe someone has done this to throw dirt at him. Lots more conspiracy theories abound. No doubt the truth (if it ever comes out) will be even stranger.

Dying from polonium 210 is slow and hard. Ironically, those with less dosage may have longer, lingering deaths. That is as may be, but the rest of us are fascinated at seeing a Bond thriller acted out in real life, right before our eyes. Who needs ‘Casino Royal’ with this going on?

  1. I can understand how this could be a very intriguing and upsetting event in the UK. I have been paying attention to Putin’s behavior for years, and that of the Russian government, and have a few thoughts on this current matter.
When I discovered what Polonium 210 is, what it is used for, and where it can be found, it was obvious to me that the Russian government is involved, and considering who the individuals effected are, I conclude Putin is behind this saga.
I can never know for certain, but rely on the ‘rats in the barn’ theory. Several times each year, we would set out rat poison in the barns’s. A few days later, and sometimes more than a week later, when we approached the barns, or opened the doors, we knew there were dead rats in the barns. We didn’t have to see them to be certain, we could smell them.
This smells like Putin, and knowing the poison he used is easily identifiable, cannot avoid detection, and causes a painful, and terrifying death. The poisoning may be even worse for those parties contaminated with lower dosages than Litvinenko. They may face years of painful cancer growths, before their demise.
So why do I think it was Putin? For several reasons, to immediately rid himself of some of his most dangerous detractors, and send a message to anyother opponents that may consider investigating him, or speaking out against him. I don’t believe Putin is concerned that it could ever be proven he was responsible, he is in a position of being untouchable by any foreign power, or domestic jurisprudence.
The honorific title of Premier Putin might be the result of these events.

  2. There is no doubt that this sends out several signals of the most totalitarian nature. As horrific as it is, it is stroke of criminal genius to murder in this way and make many, many people people feel directly and indirectly at risk of a griizly death. (I’d much rather go up in a bomb if they were the only choices)..

Putin has to be the main suspect – but as you say it will be several degrees removed from him. Frankly the old communist mindset is alive and kicking all over Russia and beyond.

  3. I’ve said this many, many times in my life, but need to repeat it once again.
    You Cannot Trust A Communist!

  4. Scientists at the U.K.’s Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston, west of London, have traced the polonium 210 found in London to a nuclear power plant in Russia, the capital’s Evening Standard newspaper reported today. Officials at the establishment didn’t return calls.

  5. Anybody that defected and felt safe to openly criticize Russia is rethinking that strategy now not only for their safety, but the safety of their family and friends as well.

Makes the old mafia seem pretty honorable by comparison.

  6. And here’s one about a former bodyguard of Putin that died with (surprise) same symptoms!

  7. And another interesting read from Bonz: Cracking the code of the nuclear assassin.

  8. And for those of you that are saying “WTF” about the assertion that geiger counters cannot detect alpha radiation, here’s a link to buying radiation detectors and what they can detect: I expect the NHS probably didn’t spend a lot of money buying something that would detect what they didn’t expect to need to detect.
