“If you won the lottery tomorrow, and you had the means to do anything you wanted, what would you do?”
That’s a better question to ask than, “If you had it to do all over again, what would you do differently,” simply because in reality, none of us has the ability to do it all over again. But, given the financial means to do anything we would ever want to do, the answers would reveal the causes, things, and purposes that are important to us.
A revolution in communication technology has taken place over the past twenty years. My college career missed it by about a decade. Consequently, most of what I know about computers and internet technology is self-taught. I find myself many times looking for answers without really understanding what questions I should be asking. So, more than anything else, self-teaching becomes very covetous of that most valuable of all resources, time. Having the financial resources buys no extra time, but it does allow our finite number of days to become more productive. And, to me, that’s what it’s all about: packing as much into each twenty-four hours as I can. So, in addition to buying the very best of the technological infrastructure and gadgetry, I would invest heavily in personal instruction on learning about the technology, and the processes of thought which are driving this new era. And, make no mistake: we have entered a new era of communication, information access, research, medicine, business, politics, everything. It has all been forever changed. And, for the better, I think.
About six years ago, the internet was to many of us, a dialup connection to AOL, email, Yahoo, and a corporate intra-net for internal communication. But to those with the training and vision, it was the platform on which Howard Dean’s Presidential campaign transformed the modern world of politics. The political Left has used this platform to dominate the internet in ways that the political Right is only now (if now) becoming aware of. Six years is several generations in the tech world. What are the questions that the Right needs to be asking as they try to play catch-up in a landscape in which they find themselves so far behind? I’ll be exploring these in upcoming posts. For now, I would consider it a victory if the Right will simply accept my premise: You’re getting your heads handed to you, and you don’t even know it. And, while waiting for your ’08 ship to come in, don’t be surprised if you find out you should have instead been waiting at the airport.

If I won the lottery tomorrow, I know what I would do.
First, get a ‘benefactor’ membership in the NRA.
Second, set up a trust for the Boy Scouts of America.
Third, get one of these.

Fourth, call these guys, and order several.

After that, I would invest heavily in wine, women, and song, then blow the rest.
I will continue to try and advance the noble cause of conservatism, but don’t have the time to spend on computer tech advances.
I will leave that worthy endeavor to the younger conservatives, that have a solid foundation for understanding the advances.
This link pertains directly to what your thread is about, nuke.

Another blog article concerning advancing communication, but this one illustrates the GOP’s general disdain for bloggers. Interesting.

I think I saw that movie
Uhh…it wasn’t a movie, it was a documentary.
/starting from scratch was tough
happy ending?
Don’t know…I ain’t done yet!
Still traveling down the road.
What would I do if I head the means to do anything I wanted? Definitely I would do a lot more travel, back country stuff, with the occasional 4-star hotel. Other than that, I wouldn’t change a great deal. I’d build the disaster proof house that I’ve been talking about with the backup generators.
I would also like to donate heavily to things like The Heifer Project as well as an organization that makes microloans to small businesses.
Sigh. Guess I still have some of that starry-eyed optimism that hasn’t qutie been smashed outta me by life yet.
Whoops. That would be “quite”, the words that I am typing are disappearing under the right margin again.
Ron White’s newest DVD is on Comedy Central again…right now.
New piece up by the inestimable Amir Taheri.

Aw, damnit. I just got SwampMan to switch over to a program on the military channel that Reaganite wanted him to see; I dunno if I can drag him away from The Last of the Mohicans” again.
Of course the majority of the Iraqis don’t support them; there would be far greater casualties if they did.
Ron White is a strong R rated in this one.
/and funny…about to talk about his honeymoon
Read the article, not just the quote…excellent piece.
You can’t fix stupid.
Stupid is…forever!
Hezbollah threatens to overthrow Lebanese government

Well, this is prime time tv, so they have edited out and bleeped a number of the funniest parts. Ron white is still funny.
I don’t really think I need to see him talk about his honeymoon.
Will it be rerun again tonight? I really like Ron White and I could watch it once SwampMan heads off to sleep.
ty for the link Nuke!..:) advancements in communication can be overwhelming
especially for the non geeky types eh?..lol
insightful read..thanks!
They sure can, Angel. Heh, who’d ‘athunk it? Geeky is the new cool.

Well, panic and running away gets you shot in the a** so that’s not really an option. Surrendering isn’t an option. Huh. Guess we’ll have to win.
Er, make that continue winning.
Well, guess everybody has gone to bed; in the meantime, I think I’ll get some work done. G’night!

His point, who would you surrender to, is excellent. In the Vietnam conflict, at least we knew who we were fighting and negotiating with, and who would take charge when we left. We don’t have that now, and tossing the keys in the air, and letting all the different elements that want them fight over them, isn’t an acceptable solution.
It’s obvious to me, what we need to continue to do, but don’t ask me to try and explain it to a leftard political opportunist, or quitter.
They showed the unedited DVD last night, and according to my on-screen guide, this show won’t be on again for as long as the guide looks into the future…about 4-5 days.
D’OH! Oh, well. Maybe it’s one I’ve already seen.
No, it’s brand new. “You Can’t Fix Stupid.”
Even Democrats will have to face the cold, hard energy facts. No matter how much they want to power the country with solar power and windmills, it cannot be done as yet, and it isn’t in the world’s best interests to have the area become more unstable than it already is. If we do not wish to keep some sort of order there, a country perhaps anathema to our interests will step into the breach.
Dang.
I had this conversation with some ME friends, long before I started chatting with people online.
We knew that, after the Taliban were sent to their hidey-holes, that Saddam was next, not just by the actions and words of our administration, but by the actions and words of Saddam. We speculated on what would happen, after Saddam fell, knowing that most of the surrounding countries were not in favor of a budding democratic state in Iraq. Not the Saudi’s..not only no, but hell no; certainly not the Mad Mullahs; nor Syria, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan, and many others. It’s just not in their interest, but for some of those I mentioned, it’s anathema to their existence.
Did you read about the Saudi/bribe connection and the English government being told to cover it up at Captain’s Quarters?
Dang…here we go with all this remodeling crap again.
No, I haven’t been to CQ in quite a while.
Yep, if Iraq succeeds, then their governments will eventually fall so they take notes from the earlier pages of history a la Vietnam, and spin the stories aimed at the credulous accordingly.
Nuke is humoring me; I cannot see to type the comments with IE and have to do it blind so he changed it for me.
Really, it’s okay, Nuke, I was just just pulling your leg. Typing blind isn’t really that big a deal. I just get lost sometimes in where I am.
How about now?
Well, he changed it for RT, too.
And here is someone that really, really needs to get a different line of work.
My Eyeses!
typing blind eh? Yes, my eye surgery went fine.
Yep, this works for me too. Sort of a barren, wintry theme. Plus, seeing who commented recently near the top is good.
Well, glad the eye surgery was a success. Is the sandy feeling gone from your eyes?
Yeah, much better. Still, though, my right eye is less than 50%
Anyways, I set this new theme up using IE. So maybe it won’t go wiggly on yall.
But, it sure looks better in Firefox, heh
Could you tone down the white…just a wee-bit?
Or change the font size?
Son stopped by today to tell me that he would be picking up some welding tanks and a big tool box tomorrow morning from the barn, and for me not to be grabbing the 12-gauge by the door if I hear some noise out there before dawn because he doesn’t want to be picking buckshot out.
/Son never stops by to say things like that to SwampMan.
What’s wrong with the white and the font size? Maybe it’s easier for Nuke with his bad eye to read.
Or maybe if you were using IE instead of Firefox…..
I’ll see if the adjustments are quick, or will require CSS surgery.
I like white, but with the skinny Arial font, it’s blinding.
I was just about to dig up the photo of the white hat to put up on the header instead of all that snow. I mean, this is a Southern blog.
I am happy nuke got the eyeball fix done, and I know that soon he will be able to enjoy the benefits. Everyone I know that has had it, rave about it. One friend of mine, had worn glasses since she was a teen, got the lasik, and no more glasses.
I, on the other hand, have never, and still don’t require any visual assistance.
IE..Firefox, pros and cons, but the pros are mostly in favor of Firefox.
I dunno, all this white sort of inspires me to strap on the snow shoes and go tramping through the frozen north.
/The temp outside is in the 40s. I may expire from cold at any time now.
I hate snow!
No, this was not lasik. I was going blind in my right eye. Central serous retinopathy, he called it.
Scary
shitstuffWell, you could have told us it was more serious than we thought.
That is spooky, messing with the retina.
Well, I’m not sure about that Lasik thing. Being able to see clearly in the morning would be nice, but if I saw what I really looked like in the mirror, I might scare myself. The possibility of blindness is a definite drawback. Besides, I noticed that I am definitely getting laugh lines. I think I’ll get those sumbitches lasered off instead. As long as no needles are involved.
Nuke, will you regain some of the sight you lost? Can you compensate with lenses?
He said it will gradually get better.
And, it has. Still a ways to go, though
How about this font n2l?
Oh, and swamps, if it ever starts getting out of whack, let me know. I seldom see it in IE, and I don’t know when it needs adjusting.
/plus, I’m half blind, sniff.
I hope the success rate for your surgery is as high as the others. Having had my lazy eye corrected surgically when I was four, I have had no vision problems at all, but have always been picky about people messing with my eyes. I love to hunt, and having good vision is crucial.
http://img138.imageshack.us/my.php?image=zeissadvtv5.jpg
So, they have you on stress reduction techniques?
By toning down the back ground, it took the pain out of seeing the screen.
Hang and maintain, nuke. If you’ve already seen improvement in less than a week since surgery, it sounds positive to me.
Thanks. I’m optimistic about it. Heh, who would ever guess that my life is stressful?
Stress?
You live in a cave, with no fire, and you have nocturnal predatory animals prowling around?
/Dang!
Actually, if I were permitted to talk openly about what I do for a living, you would understand the stress part.
I would! You have a lot going on, bound to be stressful.
BRB. Going to post the new thread over at NowPublic.com
Well, N2L, he’s also married with children.
/There’s some stress right there.
Henh!
I use the above example of real stress. What we do with our lives are mostly stressors we have created for ourselves. Nothing wrong with it. If I told you what I did, you wouldn’t understand how I keep from climbing on the tallest building, and taking shots.
Got a point Swamps.
I have blessed quiet, when I unlock the door to my sanctum sanctorum…of course I have ma’boy waiting for me, and he needs attention, and affection, but he don’t talk much.
ROFL! I dunno, I’ve come up with some pretty wild jobs for you.
I must admit, that events of two years ago, are pressing on me lately. Tomorrow, will mark the two year anniversary of when we had to make the decision to remove life support from my dear, sweet Mom. *sigh*
Yep, now imagine poor SwampMan coming home from a hard day at the salt mines.
BIAB.
Need a snack…choco-milk and apple pie, ought to do it.
Dang, that’s right! Sorry, N2L.
Hopefully you let him have some quiet time, when he kicks his boots off.
My mom got her annual physical and tests done, then her doctor called her back to repeat her tests. Then he called her back to make an appointment for a special visit in to talk about her tests and set up possible treatment strategies. She. Would. Not. Go. She told his office he had had plenty of opportunities to talk to her when she was getting her blood drawn, and she would come back in for her regular appointment at the end of November.
I know that she had her liver and kidney functions done at a local health fair, and they were fine. She had her glucose done and it was fine. I worry about something like CLL.
Here is the cross-post over at 2.0.

He has plenty of time to destress as I’m usually headed off to the gym when he walks through the door!
Katrina kind of bumped up the stress levels around here just a few notches.
Hasn’t really subsided much. It’s just the new normal
Yeah, ol’Katrina. What a vamp she was.
Sure glad this past season was uneventful.
You can burn out on too much stress, though. I don’t know if I’ll ever want to be in a really stressful job again. I know I need to leave this cocoon I’ve built for myself, but I don’t know if that drive to excel even exists for me anymore.
Hey, my white hat is working! Life is good.
Well, y’all have a good’un.
I was reminded of my dinner dishes, when I went to the kitchen for a snack.
Need to clean up, get the coffee press clean for in the morning, and hit the bunk. 00:darksomething:00hrs will be here soon.
Yep.
/Nuke’s mystery job–going from town to town, coordinating wardrobes.
Henh!
Life is sweet, also!
http://img176.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lifeissweetao3.jpg
Heh. My dinner dishes are at an Italian restaurant that SwampMan and I have long wanted to visit but were never in the neighborhood when it was open. The bruschetta was excellent, as was the pasta and soup, and the salad decidedly less so. I ate about 1/3 of my entree and that will probably be my breakfast and lunch tomorrow.
Dang!
All this talk about money.
Nite n2l. I’m going to save the hiding deer photo for the Michael Moore fisking.
Oh, and swamps, it’s not really a mysterious job, it’s just a job requirement that I remain anonymous in public forums.
G’night, then, y’all. Have a bunch of books to skim through including O’Reilly’s and Coulter’s latest, some inspirational tomes about doing good, some computer books to see if I can advance my computer knowledge past that of the average 4-year-old child, and my guilty pleasures of murder mysteries to be enjoyed with some baklava and cold milk.
Night.
Try some eggs and grits, instead of leftover pasta, for breakfast.
No way! After the herbs blend with the pasta and tomato sauce and cheese overnight, the result will be divine.
Well, I’m remaining anonymous in public forums too so that I don’t embarrass the neighbors too much.
100!
sorry, I just had to.
When you fisk cheeseburger boy, include this one, I forgot the other night.
Tell him he doesn’t have to be a loser, he can join a winning team.
