Marion County Teen Defies Ban on Battle Flag

From the Ocala Star Banner

On Monday, sophomore April Brenay, 15, began to circulate a petition among students urging that the school do away with the dress code policy banning clothing with the Confederate flag. On Wednesday, Brenay wore a Dixie Outfitters-brand shirt with a Confederate flag on the back and the message: “If this flag offends you, you need a history lesson.”

Fellow Mississippian L98Fiero had some nice remarks in support of Miss Brenay:

What it symbolizes is the South. Not a long gone past. It symbolizes a culture, a way of life.

When I see that flag, I think of kudzu, boiled peanuts, and “yes ma’am”. I steeple-004.jpgthink of country music and the Dukes of Hazzard screaming “Yeee-Haaaw”. It reminds me of biscuts and tomato gravy and “Yes sir”. I think of customized pick-up trucks, deer hunting and camoflage. I think of the smell of the Mississippi River and honeysuckle. I see pretty girls dancing in the Pilgrimage Pageant in their hoop-skirts with smartly dressed young gents for all the yankee tourists. I taste pralines, sweet potatoes and my grandmother’s fried chicken. I hear my mom pronouncing my one syslable name with two syllables and using my middle name far to often. I remember taking my rifle and walking down the street to the woods over the levee with out any questions. I remember never locking my door and playing with my friends in the sticky summer evenings and hearing the cicadas wail. It reminds me of my beloved home that I miss terribly when I’m away.

Screw anybody who says it means something different.
