Over the years, I’ve always considered Chris Matthews to be an astute observer of politics, and have enjoyed his analysis, although, not necessarily his conclusions. As with most dems, he seems more focused on events of the day rather than on trends, but his first take is usually spot-on.
I remember his first impressions of GWB, after an interview in the run-up to the 2000 election. Matthews said that the younger Bush appeared to be someone who would be very good in a “political knife-fight”, and would not mind twisting the dagger to inflict the most pain. That caught my attention, because it is the dems who generally possess the superior one on one political “knife-fighting” skills. Repubs generally favor the steamroller approach.
Why is it that the dems are so surprised that they keep losing to GWB? I think they may have forgotten Matthews assessment of their opponent. And, their frustration has led them to completely lose focus on the issues of the day.
